'Analysts believe maternity and neonatal care in the NHS needs an extra £250m to £600m a year to reach safe standards.'
👉This is less than half the £1.3bn the NHS currently spends on compensation payouts for negligent maternity care..

After 18 years in children’s services, I find this deeply troubling, repeated safeguarding warnings, vulnerable children put at risk, and a doctor who says she was silenced for speaking up. This demands answers. Protecting children must be the state’s first duty. 👇🏽
🚨Hilary Cass has called for an independent inquiry into how Brighton GPs were allowed to prescribe cross-sex hormones to children as young as 12.“There urgently needs to be an investigation of why every system that should have protected children, young people, and indeed young adults has failed,” she told me.
The employment tribunal between Dr Sarah Redvers and NHS Sussex has highlighted how regulators and the NHS collectively failed to stop prescribing of puberty blockers and hormones against national guidelines - for years - and how instead the person raising concerns was accused of transphobia and herself investigated.
Dr Redvers sat down with me for her only newspaper interview about her treatment in a scandal which, Cass now says, “dwarfs” that of the Tavistock’s GIDS.

This is a must read article this weekend.
This was yet another appalling failure to protect children. As I said yesterday - how many more wake up calls do we need?

This is utterly bonkers. How can one person (and presumably one producer) cover such an enormous brief. Education and social affairs are the things that affect millions of normal people. I am not a BBC basher, but how on earth does the corporation think this is public service?
NEW: BBC will no longer have a dedicated education editor as part of proposal that will see 100 jobs go across BBC News.
School leaders call the plan “deeply regrettable” and ask for a rethink.
Education/Social affairs editor jobs being combined.

The way @RMCunliffe handles this is exceptional, but it’s distressing to see how calmly the bigotry she’s facing is presented.
Antisemitism has always existed on both extremes and it has always had an appeal among a wider audience. They just used to be more subtle in the way they’d voice it.
Now look at where we are. Antisemitism has become trendy. A way to prove not that you’re a bigot, but that you’re A Good Person.

“I am a Jewish woman being called antisemitic. I don’t think you would sit here & lecture somebody of any other religion or race on what counted as bigotry or racism towards them in the way you have explicitly called me antisemitic..I don’t think you would do that

NEW: A major national review into maternity services heard “repeated” evidence of “normal birth ideology” despite concluding it was not “widespread” – partly because it relied on AI evidence summaries – a former expert adviser has warned hsj.co.uk/patient-safety/amo…

There is an overwhelming case for a full independent investigation into maternity services in Oxford - very difficult to understand why Oxford has been treated differently to Leeds & Sussex - I hope families continue to press.
And yet the women reaching out to the Families Failed by OUH Maternity Services campaign are telling a very different story. hellorayo.co.uk/greatest-hit…
(🧵) It's long been baffling to me why there has been ANY suggestion at all that NHS England or NHS Sussex only knew of concerns about the prescribing of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones by Dr Sam Hall in 2024. It's demonstrably false.
As presented at the employment tribunal Redvers Vs NHS Sussex today, former Sussex CEO Adam Doyle was personally told about a "disabled, vulnerable child" who was 16 year old, receiving hormones without the parents' knowledge in 2023. This is the same child that I call "Charlotte" in my book, Time to Think. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first time the WellBN GP practice/Dr Hall's prescribing practices were reported publicly.
That report found that the WellBN GP practice had been prescribing hormones to children as young as 12. Dozens of children had received "wholly inadequate" care and had been put at risk of physical and psychological harm. surreysussex.icb.nhs.uk/down…
