Not to add to the discourse, but… It’s ‘toe the line,’ not ‘tow the line.’ It’s ‘free rein,’ and not ‘free reign.’ It’s ‘eke out,’ not ‘eek out.’ It’s ‘sleight of hand,’ not ‘slight of hand.’ It's ‘Anchors aweigh,’ and not ‘Anchor's away!’

The plural of ‘Mr.’ is ‘Messrs.’ Simply adding an 's' to 'Mr.' would make it 'Mrs.,' which would be confusing. So, the plural is made by shortening the French word for ‘Misters’ (Messieurs).

IT'S 'HEAR, HEAR,' NOT 'HERE, HERE.' IT'S 'SNEAK PEEK,' NOT 'SNEAK PEAK.' IT'S 'EXACT REVENGE,' NOT 'EXTRACT REVENGE.' IT'S 'BY AND LARGE,' NOT 'BY IN LARGE.' THIS HAS BEEN A CAPSLOCK PSA.

'Monosyllabic' is not. ‘Abbreviation’ is 12 letters. ‘Thesaurus’ doesn’t have a synonym. 'Non-hyphenated' is hyphenated. Say what you will about English, but it has a sense of humor.

Something interesting you might not have realized: a number of words in English are NOUNS when you stress the FIRST syllable, but VERBS when you stress the SECOND syllable. "Your CONduct is better when you conDUCT yourself appropriately.” 🧵⬇️
