Reminded me of Russell on science as a Technique vs a Metaphysic: “..we can only wield this power by ceasing to ask ourselves metaphysical questions as to the nature of reality. Yet these questions are the evidence of a lover's attitude towards the world. Thus it is only in so far as we renounce the world as its lovers that we can conquer it as its technicians.”
You will find some of the least enlightened people in the sciences, because science has convinced them they don’t need philosophy.

It’s both and all at once. Appear and disappear they like protons that dance their baryonic dance.

They are two distinct ways in which Being reveals itself, two modes of aletheia as Heidegger taught

« Experientia est optima magistra » - is one of the first phrases you learn in Latin. Easy to understand, great meaning.. and very useful in learning Latin too

When Marshall McLuhan noted that “civilisation gives tribal man an eye for an ear”, he captured in a single sentence the power of writing and print in transforming the human experience. There is a huge difference between the immersive world of the ear that all pre-literate societies inhabited, and the linear, visual, more abstract world of writing. If sight is our 'primary' sense, this shift is modern.
Our primary sense is sight, yet most people’s favorite art is music. What mean?

An oral culture is much more than about people 'reading less'. It's an entire system of being and relating with story telling and oration at the heart of it youtube.com/watch?v=BbZPeDhT…

Was discussing the writing process with a comedian friend. While each person’s approach will ultimately be unique, the enabler is creating the SPACE for it. Whether on a particular day, we write or not, we must be free to do so—in mind and with time— IF the urge arises. Get up in the morning and see how you feel. Play guitar if you don’t feel like writing, but be ready to start at any moment. This is similar in spirit to John Cleese's approach of turning up in a quiet room for an allocated time whether you end up writing or not. It is about creating structure and space for things to emerge.

If your concerns are mainly practical/logistical, consider yourself lucky. Many are stuck on the fundamental— what to do—before even getting to 'how to make it happen', In many ways, how-to is a detail, because if you *really know* what matters, you will find a way

Just finished this gem by @JohnCleese ! “When you’re being creative there is no such thing as a mistake. The reason is very simple: you can’t possibly know if you are going down a wrong avenue until you’ve gone down it.”

One of defining moments in my life was when I (after 2 years of excellent grades) dropped out of university. It didn’t feel like I was trusting myself so much as being unable to resist doing what I felt I needed to do. Unprepared, for many weeks I woke up with my hands trembling.
