🚨 Jose Mourinho on Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola comparisons: “Someone asked me this question before and I said, ‘Before I answer, tell me something. Where are we starting Alex Ferguson’s career?’ She said, ‘Manchester United.’ I said, ‘No, no. Then already we have a problem.’ People talk about Ferguson and immediately they see Old Trafford. The trophies, Cantona, Beckham, Cristiano, Rooney, the Champions League. I see Aberdeen first. This is a man who went into Scotland when Celtic and Rangers were supposed to own everything. He wins the league with Aberdeen. Then he does it again. And again. Then apparently dominating Scotland with Aberdeen wasn’t difficult enough, so he goes into Europe. Bayern Munich. Real Madrid in the final. European trophy. Then the Super Cup. I remember once joking with him, ‘Mister, you could have retired before Manchester United and still spent the rest of your life telling everybody you were a very good manager.’ He laughed and said something like, ‘I would’ve been bored.’ That tells you everything about him. Because then he goes to Manchester United. And people speak today as if he arrived at the Manchester United we all know now. No. They hadn’t won the league for 26 years. So this man had already disturbed the natural order in one country, came to another country and apparently decided the natural order there needed disturbing too. Thirteen league titles later, now everybody remembers United as the giant. That is the funny thing about football. Sometimes a manager becomes so successful that people eventually use the size of the club he helped build as an argument against what he achieved there. So if you ask me to choose? I remember Aberdeen. Because before Ferguson had Manchester United, Manchester United had to go and find Ferguson. And they found him in Scotland with a European trophy he’d just taken off Real Madrid. For me, that changes the conversation completely.”

Worth a read from my colleague @asmamk
I wrote an essay that’s been on my mind for a very long time. It’s not the whole story, but it’s a snapshot that chronicles what I’ve personally witnessed and experienced over the last several years. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0…

Do whatever it takes, but let the final victory belong to these little ones. ❤️ Walking through the monsoon with school bags on their shoulders and dreams in their hearts. Let’s hope these protests end with a future that’s brighter for them. Best video of this monsoon 🎀

One statistic out of so many from this World Cup: Argentina committed the most fouls of any team in the entire competition: 113. Spain committed 80, and England 81.

Yesterday, I drove through Jalandhar. In Model Town, Adarsh Nagar, and New Jawahar Nagar, massive bungalows and lush greenery, flanked by high-end boutiques. Nearby, the 66 Feet Road boasts Eco County and Hamilton Towers - new havens for the wealthy. I wasn’t scouting for a house; I was searching for Shivnath Singh. I wanted to understand how, in 1978, Shivnath ran a marathon on May 28th. Today’s tree-lined avenues and paved roads didn't exist then. Jullundur, as it was known, baked under an unforgiving sun that routinely touched 42 degrees. Had the sun slipped behind the clouds for just one hour, that record might have stood at 2:08. The breaking of his 48-year-old record felt personal. I remember my old scrapbook, its cover plastered with black-and-white photos of Shivnath, Sriram Singh, Edwin Moses, and Alberto Juantorena. That the record stood for nearly half a century wasn’t for a lack of talent; it was a lack of the “Shivnath Grit.” (Trademark that, AFI). When modern Indian runners claim they could clock 2:09 in “favourable conditions,” I am seriously puzzled. It is absurd and insensitive to a man who created a 48-year marker in a furnace. His friend, former steeplechaser Prabhakara Rao, recalls: “A week before the marathon, his father passed away. He travelled back in an unreserved compartment, won the 10,000m in under 29 minutes by lapping Hari Chand, then ran that marathon in a summer where even the dawn feels like a heater.” Shivnath wore basic Adidas shoes bought in Japan - nothing like today’s tech. What would that “complete package” have clocked in 2026 Rotterdam with modern gear? “2:07 or close,” Rao laughs. “He was world-class. You can’t imagine that talent.” And then, a reminder of what that record truly meant: his son, Arjun Singh, recently shared a photograph of the original certificate - the one that stood for 48 years. Not just a statistic, not just a time, but a piece of history. The kind you don’t just archive, but hold on to forever. #sawanbarwal #shivnathsingh #48yearoldrecord #athletics

Dear @ICC, It is with a heavy heart that we now announce our unavailability to replace Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Regardless of whether they now withdraw, the short timescales ensure it is impossible for our squad to prepare in the professional manner necessary to compete effectively in this global cricketing spectacle. We are not like Scotland and able to turn up on a whim, with no kit sponsor. Our players are from all walks of life and cannot simply drop their occupations to fly halfway around the world to experience temperatures only normally felt in Finnish saunas. Our captain, a professional baker, needs to attend to his oven, our ship captain needs to steer his vessel, and our bankers need to go bankrupt (again). This is the harsh reality of cricket at the amateur level of the game. This news will be extremely disappointing to our fans. Despite being the most peaceful nation on Earth, we maintain an army of online followers, and are the world's 14th most followed national board on X. We were ready to give the Dutch the biggest shock they have experienced since William of Orange lost the Battle of Landen in 1693. And the Americans were looking forward to taking on Greenland, or so their orange-dyed leader thought. Our loss is likely Uganda's gain. We wish them well. Their kits cannot be missed unless you have epilepsy, in which case they are probably best avoided. The future is always ice, until it isn't. Yours sincerely, Icelandic Cricket Association

In India, police officers should first be trained on how to behave & communicate with common people. This incident took place in Katihar dist of Bihar, where a sibling pair had gone to a café for dinner. This officer should be terminated immediately to set an example. @bihar_police

How about No Smooth Roads, No Taxes/Tolls in the state to be strictly enforced statewide?
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the ‘No PUC, No Fuel’ rule will soon be strictly enforced statewide. Vehicles without valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates will be denied fuel at petrol pumps. Officials said CCTV cameras will scan vehicle numbers, verify PUC status, and cancel invalid certificates on the spot. Each PUC certificate will carry a Unique Identity to prevent fraud. Sarnaik also directed strict action against fake PUC rackets and proposed issuing certificates at showrooms, calling the initiative vital for a cleaner, healthier Maharashtra.
