Moving words from Osman Kavala, who has been unjustly imprisoned for nine years. “When I was first arrested, I thought it was a mistake that would soon be corrected. I was wrong. I was 60 when I went to prison. I have since spent nearly all the years I could have devoted to working in civil society and a significant part of the years I could have expected to enjoy good health, behind bars. Still, despite everything we are going through, I believe I will live to see the rule of law take hold in my country.” #OsmanKavala

First real test of system Mazlum Abdi agreed to in dissolving SDF & integrating w/Syrian state (& personally taking a position w/President). Abdi’s from Kobani, & the ‘Rojava Revolution’ that led to (now ended) Kurd self-rule began here. In other words, he’s got to balance a lot.
Mazloum Abdi arrived in Kobani on Saturday as authorities sought to calm tensions following a deadly prison fire and unrest over the killing of Kurdish fighter Sami Sheikhmous Hasso. "We do not want Kurds to take their revenge on Syrian government apparatuses," Adnan Bozan, head of the Kobani Local Council of the Kurdish National Council in Syria, told Kurdistan24. Eight inmates were killed and 17 others injured in the prison fire, according to Kurdistan24 reporting. Read more: kurdistan24.net/en/story/938…

Today, we remember the victims of the Yazidi genocide and honour the resilience of survivors. As @NadiaMuradBasee reminds us, the promise of protection is more than words on paper. It is a lifeline for people forced to flee persecution and a promise we must continue to keep.
75 years ago, the world made a promise to people forced to flee. Nobel Laureate @NadiaMuradBasee spoke about the space where that promise lives, and the continued action needed so everyone forced to flee can find safety and protection.

My knee jerk reaction to Cem Küçük getting "the treatment" is that it's more of the snake eating its tail. But honest to god I have no idea.

This clip shows worn-down roads in Kobane. Since integrating, Kobane has not received a budget for infrastructure projects. I was told that the city didn't expect to receive any such funds until 2027. Locals fear a return to Baath-era neglect.

YPJ proved itself on the battlefield as an elite counter-terror force. The new Syrian army rejects its experienced, well-trained personnel -- just because they're women. I met @YPJspox to discuss integration + the importance of women's participation in all Syrian institutions.

German journalist Eva-Maria Michelmann spent five months detained in #Syria. She was moved to 5 different prisons where she experienced torture and terrible conditions. Fellow women prisoners were interrogated with beatings and electric shock. Babies and children were in prison with 20 people enclosed together in small dank rooms with nothings but mattresses on the floor.
German journalist Eva-Maria Michelmann spent five months detained in Syria, moved between prisons and cut off from the world. Now free, she warns: Syria is not safe. Her colleague Ahmet Polad remains imprisoned. Listen to her testimony.
