The finished project tells us what a student produced. It cannot tell us everything they learned. Ask what changed their mind, what they rejected and what they now understand. Education must develop judgement, not merely reward convincing results.
A school teaches through more than its curriculum. Studio culture, time, materials, critique and independence shape what students become. Educational quality is not simply what we intend to teach, but what the conditions we create allow students to learn.
Design Education Talks brings educators and practitioners into the same conversation. Their disagreements are often where the most useful questions begin. linktr.ee/thenewartschool
Every day, a designer practises something: attention or distraction, courage or compliance, care or indifference. The designer you become is shaped by those habits.

Progress does not always mean replacing what came before. Radical continuity asks which traditions of observation, craft, dialogue and care deserve to be recovered for the future of creative education.

A designer's first tool is not software. It is the question. Begin with words, evidence and an understanding of the people affected. Only then should the visual language emerge.
Ruskin asked us to see carefully and consider the conditions in which things are made. Those questions still belong in design education: lulu.com/spotlight/heretakis
The Grid Is Lying to You: A critique of the moment when a useful compositional system becomes an unquestioned rule. Particularly relevant to your emphasis on methodology and independent design judgement.

At your next critique, ask: what did you abandon, and what did that teach you? The rejected path may tell you more than the polished presentation. linktr.ee/thenewartschool
Post-War Precision and the Pedagogy of Clarity. I examine Frederick Lambert's historical survey and the relationship between typography, editorial design and institutional authority, revisiting graphic design as a cultural and intellectual practice. heretakis.medium.com/graphic….
Craft for the AI Age. This essay argues that craft should be understood as a cultivated form of intelligence rather than a nostalgic attachment to traditional techniques. It connects making, attention, judgement and ethical responsibility. newartschool.education/2025/….
A partnership is not an education because two institutions sign an agreement. Its value begins when students investigate a shared problem, make and revise together, and develop capabilities they did not possess before. Exchange should be measured by learning, not logos.
An impressive portfolio leaves an essential question open: who has the student become through making it? My new essay on design education:

A drawing is not valuable merely because it resembles its subject. It matters because it reveals whether we have actually looked deeply. Remove the resistance of observation too early and we may produce images without developing perception.
Students can learn software quickly. Learning to tell when a brief is wrong takes longer. Make room for them to challenge the question they were given. linktr.ee/thenewartschool

Art is kept away from children
in government schools
because it lets them see new worlds
or beauty, honesty, freedom, and truth
which government is against.
It is by design.
