Justice Secretary Alex Norris was questioned on #BBCBreakfast about comments he made last month that the Government couldn't stop the release of two of the killers of PC Andrew Harper, before changing that policy at the weekend

My letter in The Telegraph today responds to the Government's announcement on offender restriction zones.
While this is a welcome reform, victims are still in the dark about how these protections will work in practice.
What victims need now is certainty - and safety.

ALT Screenshot of a letter to the editor published in The Telegraph by Claire Waxman, Victims' Commissioner for England and Wales. The letter welcomes the Government's proposed offender restriction zones, which would place restrictions on offenders rather than victims. It highlights unanswered questions about who will be covered, how the zones will operate, and how breaches will be monitored and enforced, arguing that victims need certainty about what protections will be available to them and when.

Should the PM block just unlawful manslaughter cases from early release?
Victims rights campaigner @hetnanton has written to the Lord Chancellor @AlexJJNorris to urge him not to take a “piecemeal” approach to the justice system.

If Govt only exempts some manslaughter offences from early release, it's missing the threat domestic abusers pose to victims.
Govt must consult victims & services before abusers are released, and probation must have the resources to keep communities safe.

Chair of @RefugeCharity, Hetti Barkworth-Nanton @hetnanton told Metro about research conducted by Refuge last year.
They found around 80% of people would report a violent attack on somebody to the police, but when there was a nonviolent attack – which is actually one of the more dangerous forms of abuse – less than 40% of people recognized and reported it.
She added: ‘This showed us we needed to raise more awareness around subtle red flags that you need to look out for so that you can spot the signs and make sure victims get the help they need.
‘Raising awareness is a key goal, but we also want to start having more conversation with people.
‘The more we can have people come in here and talk to us about their experiences and what they’ve seen they create a much richer tapestry of inflammation that Refuge can work with.’
This is such a real and emotional setback for all survivors of abuse. @CommissionerDA @RefugeCharity
So much to unpack here - totally agree with a whole system approach which in truth may only be realistic if driven locally with the ability to rapidly inform nationally and build out. Fail fast and succeed quickly. Thank you @YvonneARoberts
