The International Day for the Remembrance of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its Abolition is an opportunity to remember those whose lives were stolen by slavery and to confront the legacy it left behind.
Last year in Ghana, I saw the coastal sites where enslaved people were forced onto ships across the Atlantic. Many journeys were linked to London, and that history still resonates across our city today.

Barack and I were so honored to have @AkunyiliCrosby create our portrait for the Obama Presidential Center. Her artistic brilliance shines through — and the way she infused such life and joy into the piece is truly extraordinary. We love it, and we think everyone who visits the Center will too!

The transatlantic slave trade was a crime against humanity that struck at the core of personhood, broke up families & devastated communities.
Let us reject the false narrative of racial difference & fully commit to human rights, equality & the inherent worth of every person.

UN votes to recognise slavery as 'gravest crime against humanity' bbc.in/3PnDIe6
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
UN did not recognize slavery as the "gravest crime", only the transatlantic slave trade, and it also calls for "reparations" to be paid.
Most historical slavery is not covered by this resolution, and none of the current slavery.
