Interesting development. New money for the global response to malaria. I'll bet that GlobalHealth Inc is beating a path to your door to get a piece of it.
GiveWell aims to direct $2.5B+ in new malaria funding from 2027–2032. Malaria still kills around 600k people each year. We’re exploring many strategies, including the Malaria Impact Accelerator, a proposed partnership with @GlobalFund. Learn more: bit.ly/4yNkD60

It appears that @mrlouismolina is still allowed to come onto Rikers Island.
People in #NYCDOC’s care, agency staff and special guests participated in a special viewing of the film “Fatherless No More” on Sept. 30 at the Robert N. Davoren Center (RNDC) on #RikersIsland. Released on video-on-demand platforms last month, the documentary chronicles @NFL #SuperBowl XXVI champion Pastor @TimJohnsonOWOC’s journey to volunteer at Rikers Island and details stories of redemption for young men in the Fatherless No More Initiative at RNDC. The film also sheds light on the unsung heroism of our Correction Officers through the service of Officers White and Cummings, two veterans in the Department who work alongside Johnson to mentor young men at RNDC. Led by Commissioner Stanley Richards and Johnson, last Wednesday’s viewing also featured a question-and-answer session with panelists involved with the film to help inspire the young men in the audience to continue to work towards a brighter future. Two former NYC DOC leaders who helped to launch the initiative, Commissioner Louis Molina and First Deputy Commissioner Francis Torres, also joined @DOCCommish on the panel to continue to support the agency’s ongoing efforts to help individuals in our care. The @DOCCommish and @fortunesociety are like hand and glove.
#NYCDOC officials recently celebrated the progress and achievements of individuals in the Sober Living Community Unit in West Facility on #RikersIsland. The unit is the second of its kind to be opened in the Department in recent years. People in our care living in this unit remain committed to maintaining sobriety and they live in a structured environment that emphasizes community, accountability, consistency and peer support. During the program, their recent success in completing the first module in the unit’s Substance Misuse Curriculum was also recognized. Last week’s programming also featured words of encouragement from Commissioner Stanley Richards, West Facility staff, officials from our Division of Programs and Community Partnerships and community partners from @thefortunesoc. NYC DOC remains committed to utilizing education, counseling and other important support services to assist people in our care in their journey to reenter the community. Learn more about the programming provided in our Division of Programs and Community Partnerships today at on.nyc.gov/4etr5rY. #NYCDOCPrograms #ThrowbackThursday

"Real change demands that people risk the consequences of refusing to serve, or refusing to stay silent. If the price of speaking out against letting dogs eat the corpses of children you have deliberately massacred is being put in jail, then go to fucking jail."
I was invited to watch NAZA and asked to sit on Q&A panels afterwards to discuss. Here are my thoughts on what the film reveals and what it shields. The story told and the target it misses. #naza #israel electronicintifada.net/conte…

What do Malcolm Gladwell, far right propagandists, Democratic Party politicians, the non-profit Vera Institute for Justice, and “socialists” from Jacobin Magazine have in common? I wrote about how they are all misleading people about crime and safety, and why it matters so much.

It is not antisemitic to say that dropping bombs on refugee camps and using 7 year old children for target practice is evil. Suggesting otherwise is nothing short of insanity.

"Prosecutors say Williams was allegedly spotted in a treatment cubicle at the main clinic ... and took the items as he left the cubicle." One has to ask how a detainee at the OBCC clinic at an NYC jail on Rikers was alone in a cubicle. And what was he alleged to have stolen?
A captain and three officers were wounded after a person assaulted multiple uniformed staff members Saturday on Rikers Island, according to the New York City Department of Corrections. Officials say it happened at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center just before 12:30 p.m. The captain and officers were injured while attempting to control the situation. Paramedics rushed the four victims to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital. Their current conditions are unknown. bronx.news12.com/captain-3-o…

"At Rikers, Novick [@LynnNovick] couldn’t show the inmates all eight hours of her new film". Why not? Don't accept @CorrectionNYC reasons to restrict detainees right to information. Will the entire @PBS series be available on detainees' tablets come November?

Starting a Ben Lerner book is like setting out on a journey without a destination. I never know where it will take me. 'Transcription' was a short trip.
“The discourse of the novel is singularly haunted by discourses of universality….A sign of maturity as a writer, I realize now,” he told me, “is that I no longer pretend I understand what exactly my work is saying or doing.” Our specific, best guy ✨ vulture.com/article/ben-lern…

Short thread of the day on hasbara הַסְבָּרָה.
Replying to @RachelSFink
There’s always two phases of Hasbara - the ones who create it and the ones who share it. Looking over this list, it’s a lot of phase 1ers - those who know that a) the apartheid accusation refers to Palestinians living under occupation in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, b) the Knesset voted to ban all Arab parties c) Arab Israelis are subject to plenty of discrimination both systematic and societal. As soon as your Aunt Phyllis posts it on Facebook, that’s how you know we’re in phase 2.

I'm having trouble finding a copy of the constitution of Israel. Does anyone reading this tweet have a copy they can send me?
Roger Cohen counts on you not knowing that in fact Israel's "founding ideals" were ethnic cleansing.

I keep saying it – Wab Kinew is a leader for our future – Canada’s future.
Wab Kinew calls on Ottawa to abolish Indian Act: "I'm not sure if that lines up with your vision of Canada, that we still have a race-based form of identification in this country. It's long overdue that we have a relationship with Indigenous peoples in Canada that reflects who we are as Canadians today."
