Am SO desolate to hear of wonderful Patrick Stewart's death! We became friends over the last decade or so though I never saw enough of him - but his glorious daily online readings of the Shakespeare Sonnets were the best antidote to the miserable isolation of Covid imaginable - and knowing there was another brilliant impassioned role around the corner was a kind of heartening kinship. His Macbeth and Antony were stupendous and his Hirst taking it to Ian McKellen's Spooner in Pinter 's No Man's Land unforgettable. Patrick could do menace to make you shiver. But the thing about the greatest actors is, their voice lives in your head for good - and in Patrick's case that laugh too!
Why is there no 18.30 train between Manchester Picc and York today. I regularly commute on this train and it has entirely vanished. Not on departure board. How do I get compensation on my season ticket if it doesn't exist? There next Thursday &last week but not today?

90 years ago, the Jarrow Crusaders marched nearly 300 miles to London in protest at unemployment and poverty. Thomas Cantrell Dugdale’s 1936 painting captures their arrival from a Piccadilly interior (possibly the Ritz).

‘Leaning Etc’ was first exhibited at Peter Brook’s London agent, Agnew’s, in 1969. With its areas of strong colour it is less daunting than the ‘dark satanic mills’ portrayed by Lowry and his contemporary Northern artists. (From the James Mason Collection sold by Bonhams in 2010)

A story published in the July 1924 magazine of what is now the Town and Country Planning Association on the impact of the London County Council on its residents (and claimed as definitely true):

ALT Text reads; On August 2, 1914, a young Londoner who had never seen the sea went to a camp on the coast between Lowestoft and Yarmouth. His eyes dilated with wonder, as he gazed along the ten miles of sandy shore and out on the dappled sea. He was asked what he thought of it, and he replied “Gaw! Fancy the L.C.C. puttin’ all that sand down ’ere.” He had played in a sandpit in a London park: the L.C.C. was his Providence.

Huddersfield had built 7400 new council homes by 1951. My second post on the housing (and civic) history of the town tells the story from 1919 to 1951:
