Can a single scene from a Bollywood movie help create a 3-billion-dollar business?
Well, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol may have done exactly that with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge!
And surprisingly, an Italian academic has researched this fascinating connection.
In 2018, Sabrina Ciolfi, associated with the University of Milan, published a research paper titled Food and Fasting: Representing the Traditional Role of Women in Hindi Cinema.
She made a fascinating observation.
According to Ciolfi’s research, DDLJ became a turning point in the popularisation of Karwa Chauth across India.
The film presented a traditional religious ritual through the lens of modern romance.
It wasn’t simply about a wife fasting for her husband anymore.
It also became a celebration of mutual love, commitment and companionship.
Even unmarried women began observing the fast for their partners.
And Bollywood continued amplifying this romantic image through films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
Now look at the numbers!
According to estimates by the Confederation of All India Traders, business associated with Karwa Chauth reached:
₹15,000 crore in 2023.
₹22,000 crore in 2024.
And an astonishing ₹28,000 crore in 2025!
That’s approximately 3.16 billion US dollars!
Jewellery, clothing, cosmetics, mehndi, beauty salons, gifts and traditional puja items all contribute to this enormous festive economy.
Of course, Bollywood didn’t invent Karwa Chauth. This tradition existed long before Shah Rukh Khan was born.
And cinema alone cannot explain its commercial growth.
But DDLJ helped transform how millions of Indians imagined and celebrated this festival.

মাননীয় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী আপনার অর্থমন্ত্রী বিধানসভায় বাজেট পেশ করার সময়ে অক্টোবর মাস থেকে যুবশক্তি দেওয়ার কথা ঘোষণা করেছিলেন,আজ অক্টোবর মাসের ১৪ তারিখ,এখনো পর্যন্ত সরকারের তরফ থেকে কোনও ঘোষণা দেখতে পাইনি, এটাও কি ১৫ লক্ষ টাকা দেওয়ার মত জুমলা ছিল নাকি ?
