Sunday Jackson is free!!!
Sunday Jackson should never have spent a single night in detention let alone 11 years on death row. The years he lost cannot be restored.
This case exposes a profound failure of justice and underscores the human cost of a system that punishes survival instead of protecting rights.
Thank you @GovernorAUF for alluding to the voice of courage.

From testimonies to thought-provoking conversations, and reflections, Stories of Life: Beyond the Sentence brought the human stories behind capital punishment into focus.
Watch our event recap for moments from the day, as we continue the conversation on justice, dignity and the abolition of the death penalty.
At the South-South Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) and Justice Convening in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Hope Behind Bars Africa brought together a diverse community of stakeholders on the theme “Protecting Freedom of Religion or Belief in Nigeria: From Dialogue to Action”.
Together, they examined the realities of freedom of religion or belief in the South, engaging with the region’s unique experiences, the justice-related challenges faced by minority religious communities, and the implications for human rights, access to justice, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
One of the most significant aspects of the convening was the opportunity for voices from different religious, cultural, professional, and institutional backgrounds to share their perspectives, challenge assumptions, and engage in meaningful dialogue that will lead to action.
Hope Behind Bars Africa (@hopebehindbar) created a space to bring the stories behind capital punishment in Nigeria into public conversation in commemoration of World Day Against the Death Penalty 2026.
At Stories of Life: Beyond the Sentence, Ketty Regis, Cooperation Attaché at the Embassy of France in Nigeria (@FranceInNigeria), opened the event with reflections on the humanity of people on death row and the need for justice and humanity to guide the push for abolition. Our Executive Director, Funke Adeoye (@thefunkeadeoye), welcomed guests and highlighted HBBA’s work with people on death row, including our research, Beyond Her Sentence.
Spoken word poet Pelemo (@pelemonyajo) performed “Penitencia”, challenging the idea of correction through capital punishment. We also screened a documentary on women on death row, including Christina Pike, who was sentenced to death in 1998 and survived two lethal injection attempts in 2026. A panel of voices from journalism, law, corrections and research explored what it means to look beyond the sentence, followed by questions and reflections from the audience.
The stories we hear shape the narratives, legal practices and reforms that influence how we treat people affected by capital punishment.
Thank you to every one who attended and contributed, especially our partners, the Embassy of France in Nigeria for their support to put this event together.
We also thank the Nigerian Correctional Service(@CorrectionsNg), Legal Aid Council of Nigeria(@LACNIGERIA), Amnesty International Nigeria(@AmnestyNigeria), Shades of Us(@shadesofusafric), NULAI(@NULAINigeria), Global Rights(@GlobalRights), student law clinics and other partners who joined us.
