On Wednesdays we eat beans. Going forward, every Wednesday will be Beansday, a weekly program promoting alternatives to meat in support of animal welfare. The spokesperson for this sustainability initiative is none other than beloved actor and animal lover @kevinbacon. “Beansday reflects our mission to tackle the root causes of animal suffering by making it easy for anyone to take a meaningful step for animals each week. By supporting people who choose to embrace more healthy, tasty, plant-based foods, we can also help build a better world for animals and our environment, says @humaneworldkb. PA Gov. Josh Shapiro signed the Beagle Bill, which @humaneworldorg calls “common-sense, bipartisan legislation.” From April 20, 2027, the law bans sales of newly animal-tested cosmetics and helps dogs and cats find homes after research. Read more: humaneworld.org/en/news/gove…

Pennsylvania is the 18th state to require a pathway to adoption for dogs and cats used in testing and the 13th to ban the sale of animal-tested cosmetics. The victory adds momentum behind the bipartisan COMPACT Act, which would end federal funding for dog and cat experiments and create adoption pathways. humaneworld.org/en/blog/posi… #BeagleBill #COMPACTAct #AnimalTesting #AnimalWelfare

Denmark, once the world’s largest producer of mink fur, is set to ban mink farming rather than seek an exception from upcoming EU restrictions. The ban will take effect in August 2027 with the EU’s ban on American mink keeping and breeding. “This is a momentous decision. We applaud the Danish coalition government for ending a cruel industry that confines mink to small wire cages solely for fur fashion,” says @humaneworldorg. In 2025, American mink was added to the EU’s List of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern, now requiring a special permit to keep or breed the species. Thanks to organizations like Humane World for Animals Europe’s Fur Free Alliance partner Anima, Denmark will not be seeking this permit. Read more: humaneworld.org/en/news/denm…

Denmark, once the world's largest mink fur producer, is ending mink fur farming. That's what systemic change looks like. As people grow more vocal about ending animal cruelty, policymakers, markets and institutions are responding. That’s why the future is fur-free. humaneworld.org/en/blog/fur-… #FurFreeEurope #AnimalWelfare

Five baby orangutans were found abandoned in India, roughly 1,700 miles from their native rainforests, highlighting the growing illegal trade of endangered apes. India’s exotic pet trade “sits at the crossroads of biodiversity loss, unbridled community demand, and organized criminal activity,” according to a report by @humaneworldorg. Demand from wealthy collectors is fueling the trade, while loopholes in India’s wildlife regulations can allow trafficked animals to enter the legal exotic pet market. It’s the end of an inhumane era. Today, the New York City Council voted to end horse-drawn carriage operations. Horses are highly sensitive animals with powerful flight instincts; they cannot exist happily or safely alongside the traffic, noise and congestion of New York City streets. The passage of Intro 943 marks a historic milestone for animals. humaneworld.org/en/blog/brea… #NewYorkCity #CarriageHorses #AnimalWelfare

In a historic victory for horses, the New York City Council has voted to end horse-drawn carriage operations, paving the way for nearly 200 horses to leave the dangers of the city’s congested streets. “But animals are not inert icons; they are living, breathing individuals with needs, instincts and intentions all their own,” says @humaneworldkb, president and CEO of @humaneworldorg. After years of advocating for an end to the carriage industry, Humane World for Animals is among the organizations offering placement options for the horses. The legislation also prohibits their sale for slaughter and now awaits action by the mayor. Read more: humaneworld.org/en/news/new-… #newyorkcity #horse #Romanchlaw

Humane World for Animals India and government partners have laid the foundation stone for India’s first permanent emergency evacuation shelter for animals. @humaneworldorg says that the shelter will “help ensure that no family goes through the pain of choosing between saving themselves or their animals.” The shelter will provide evacuation, temporary housing, and medical care for animals during natural disasters in the Kerala region, where Humane World for Animals India has aided in two rescue efforts, aiding over 180 animals in 2024 landslides and more than 10,000 affected by the 2026 flooding in Kerala. Conservation groups, including @humaneworldorg, are suing to overturn a Trump administration rule that eliminates automatic protections for newly listed threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). “The federal government is eliminating automatic safeguards for species newly listed as threatened, creating a more complicated process that could leave animals at greater risk,” says @humaneworldorg. With the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service already facing budget cuts, staff losses and backlogs, this rule further slows down conservation work, removing agencies’ abilities to automatically give threatened species the same protections as endangered ones and requiring them develop protections species by species. One of the things that gives me hope is seeing communities come together to solve challenges with compassion. In India, that approach is creating better outcomes for street dogs and the people who live alongside them. A powerful story: humaneworld.org/en/blog/comm…🐕❤️

The Trump administration has finalized a rule allowing bear baiting on Alaska’s national preserves, reversing critical wildlife protections. “[The law] is indefensible and inexcusable as a federal policy decision,” says @humaneworldorg. The rule allows hunters to lure black and brown bears using human food as bait, teaching bears to associate people with food and putting bears and humans at risk by increasing the likelihood of dangerous encounters with hikers, campers, and other visitors. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has unanimously passed the beagle bill, which would ban the sale of new animal-tested cosmetics and create pathways for former research dogs and cats to find homes. “The future of science is prioritizing those non-animal alternatives,” says @humaneworldorg. The face of the Beagle Bill, Phoebe, was one of about 4,000 beagles Humane World for Animals rescued from a Virginia breeding facility in 2022. As sunsets come earlier in fall, great horned owls’ nighttime hunting can overlap with peak pet-walking hours. @humaneworldorg says there are only “scattered reports” of owls attacking small dogs and that attacks on pets are rare. Just in case, there are a few ways to ensure your pets are protected, including properly supervising your furry friends and adding overhead cover where pets spend time outdoors. In Colorado, Amendment 83 threatens the state’s wildlife by undermining existing wildlife protections related to inhumane hunting and fishing practices. “It adds intentionally vague and undefined language,” @humaneworldorg says, warning that terms like “traditional methods” could be used to challenge protections. The letter was organized by Humane Veterinary Medical Alliance, the veterinary division of Humane World for Animals, and signed by more than 40 Colorado veterinary professionals. International outerwear brand Woolrich Europe goes fur-free following a global campaign that generated more than 200,000 emails to the company and demonstrations outside its stores across Europe. “By going fur-free, Woolrich Europe is sending a message to the EU Commission that fur is cruel and no longer fashionable,” says @humaneworldorg. Beginning January 1st, 2027, all new Woolrich Europe collections will be fur-free. The brand hopes to expand its fur-free choice to operations outside of Europe.
