Current tug of war is between sanity and madness. Moderate vs fringe. If you're pulling in any direction but center, sorry: you're on Team Crazy People. GLHF.

My political philosophy is "competence" In our age of unrelenting idiocy, it doesn't matter what you believe if you are unable to (1) draft coherent policy, (2) fund it, and (3) *implement it successfully* If you can't actually do that, all left vs right battles are meaningless

"The Jew has no interest in the solution of the questions regarding the German fate. . . . The Jew has caused our misery, and today he makes a living from it." -Joseph Goebbels, 30 July 1928 "The Jew will grow fat from the coins you give him, the German will starve. So what? Let the light shine on the Jews, let the Germans dwell in darkness." -Joseph Goebbels, 10 December 1928 “When the German nation was, thanks to the inflation instigated and carried through by Jews, deprived of the entire savings which it had accumulated in years of honest work. . . ." -Adolph Hitler, 30 January 1939 Do you need more examples or no? There are plenty of them.
New @RebellionPac ad dropping in Michigan. We have to suffer here at home, so Israel can get all its wars. That’s why they buy politicians like Mike Rogers. He promised to serve Israel “unconditionally,” but never made that promise to you.

Revanchist white nationalism that concentrates power behind a charismatic demagogue who exercises that power via extralegal means to punish enemies and minorities
What does any of this even mean? I'm serious. What Nazi adjacent shit? What does he mean by the 1945 reference? I keep asking for people to be specific because I want people to say, directly, what they mean. So. What, specifically, does any of this even mean?

This is the movement you've spent your whole life building. It's your only accomplishment and all you'll ever be remembered for. You have no one to blame but yourself.
Replying to @JoelWBerry
This has been probably the darkest 24 hours I’ve ever experienced on social media in my life. The things being said about Samuel, his wife, and his small children are unthinkably evil. There is a segment of the so-called “Christian” nationalist crowd that has given itself completely over to Satan. I’ve never had more resolve to defeat these subversive demons invading the Right and invading Christianity.

Joel Berry has promoted deportation of illegal immigrants that he doesn’t know. Suddenly he opposes it in this case since he’s sympathetic to the person who’s being deported. This is inconsistent. x.com/joelwberry/sta…

The central problem with Mehdi's style of "debate" is that it leads to asinine spats over semantics and minutia like the meaning of "former incumbents," or the exact date ranges used for counting people's tweets In all seriousness, what are we even doing here?
Just admit calling him an incumbent was disingenuous and dumb. Also admit saying that that Republicans are spending much more attacking El Sayed than they are peltola is also disingenuous and dumb. Michigan has 10 million people, Alaska has 700k. The GOP is spending almost 5x more per person on ads in Alaska than they are in Michigan. Can you go back to being a real journalist? You Aren't thriving as a hack/twitter Troll.

I think it's pretty bad that we're supporting an illegitimate and corrupt Venezuelan dictator just because she's letting us loot the country. Everything about that is just vile.

If you're saying it's not fair to compare them because they're "apples and oranges," you're effectively admitting that apples perform better than oranges We should nominate more apples
"'It's fair to have a debate,' you wrote, 'about the best direction of the party, but that debate should be conducted on honest terms.' I read that and I think: You're not being honest here, Matthew. Comparing El-Sayed to Cooper and Peltola is not just disingenuous; it's apples and oranges." Latest clip/exchange from my interview with @mattyglesias on whether centrists like him and Neera Tanden are trying to apply unfair metrics/expectations/comparisons to @AbdulElSayed, whose race is sui generis. As a believer in the "adults in the room" theory from the first term, this is about what I expected when I sized up the effectively adult-free second term that materialized in Jan 2025 But even by that standard I've still been surprised by the sheer stupidity of some decisions
I thought Trump 2 was gonna be way worse. Every day now I wake up with a euphoric sense of relief

Russians invaded Ukraine because they were imminently threatened by the idea of Ukraine joining an organization that would make it harder for them to invade Ukraine.
For real. But it’s not even just liberals, so many people on the left do this as well. Honestly, Russia is a huge litmus test for me. The whole situation is way more complicated than just regurgitating the establishment line of 'Russia bad' without looking at the broader context, and you cannot understand the crisis without looking at decades of NATO expansion. Like, are we actually analysing the world through a lens of global power structures, or are you just repeating what you see on the mainstream news?

It is true that if you interrupt someone repeatedly and refuse to let them say what they think you can win a debate on the flow but it is really disappointing that @mehdirhasan doesn't believe enough in his point of view to let @mattyglesias get a word in edgewise on the pod. Could have been a genuinely illuminating conversation but it's just nonstop interrupting (and this is from someone who interrupts matt like 5x a conversation!!)

I’m confident in Abdul winning in 2026. I am not confident in 2032. I think he will be a fantastic senator and a great attack dog for democrats in the senate to weaponize against idiot republicans, but he needs to shore up his weaknesses after the election

I think the reaction I have to this is the normal-person reaction: It's preposterous to suggest the candidate who thinks sex changes for prisoners are a civil right is also a secret Islamist
🚨 “Oh, for Fuck’s Sake, I Forgot to Ask Him If He Disavows the Muslim Brotherhood”: How One of the World’s Most Notorious Islamist Movements Became a Punchline I spliced Jon Stewart’s backstage exchange with his team to the beginning because I couldn’t get over how ridiculous it was. Stewart realizes he forgot to ask Abdul El-Sayed whether he disavows the Muslim Brotherhood. The joke escalates from there, making the question itself seem absurd, almost as though the very act of raising the subject is something to be laughed off rather than seriously examined. In the original sequence, this exchange comes at the end of a discussion in which El-Sayed argues that the media ask him “gotcha” questions that have little to do with what voters actually care about. Stewart sympathizes with that argument, and the Muslim Brotherhood question becomes an example of the media’s supposed absurdity. The recent focus on El-Sayed’s alleged connections to the Muslim Brotherhood didn’t materialize out of nowhere. El-Sayed’s own half-sister, with whom he shares a mother, has publicly alleged family ties to the organization in a tweet. Yet that context goes unexplored, even as the issue is reduced to a media “gotcha” question, and that’s before we even get to the alleged connections on El-Sayed’s wife’s side of the family.

A journalist ambushing another journalist for occasionally mentioning a major national figure because it might hurt Democrats is pretty on the nose, zeitgeist-wise.
Me: "Do you know how many times you've tweeted about Piker since you wrote that tweet [about not tweeting about him] on August 30th?" @mattyglesias: "Probably more than I intended to." Me: "8 times.... you tweeted about Mike Rogers 6 times. So you're tweeting about the streamer you didn't want to talk about more than the Republican candidate you say you want to defeat." Yglesias: "Yeah, that's fair." Me: "Why?" Yglesias: "What do you want me to say? You got me." This is such a pristine encapsulation of factional nonsense It's actually perfect So utterly meaningless
Don't want to fight all day about tweet counts, but I reject the assertion that they "obviously couldn't include" tweets I made on the day of the taping. We recorded at 5pm and the tweets were sent before that. It's an understandable mistake, but the count was wrong.

AIPAC is not why we're at war with Iran jfc
AIPAC is now spending as much as $9 million against Abdul El-Sayed. AIPAC is why we’re at war in Iran. AIPAC is why the U.S. has supported genocide in Gaza. We must say NO to AIPAC. YES to electing Abdul as Michigan’s next U.S. Senator.

A frustrating aspect of this show is that the host doesn’t say in any detail what he’s going to ask you about and then gets to confront you with a big stack of research that it’s not possible to pause and do fact-checking on and then it turns out some of it’s not true.

They have nothing else
The Islamophobia in the Michigan Senate race is officially at nuclear-grade levels. 1. Ted Cruz claiming Abdul El-Sayed might share classified intel with the Muslim Brotherhood and terrorists 2. Trump calling AES "Mohammed" and mocking his name 3. Mike Rogers trying to tie AES's biological mom, whom he stopped being raised by when he was 3, to Al-Qaeda This stuff is more pernicious than most people acknowledge today. Republicans could win this race by challenging AES's ideas, but they apparently can't help themselves but fear monger about his faith. Florida Rep. Randy Fine wrote: “We need more Islamophobia, not less. Fear of Islam is rational.” Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles: Muslims “don’t belong in American society.” Alabama Sen Tommy Tuberville saying “The enemy is inside the gates" about Zohran, next to pictures of the Twin Towers burning on 9/11. It has a very particular, distinct post 9/11 vibe to it. Really, really unhinged and ugly shit, and not nearly enough people calling it out.

Bucha. It was a genocide, recognized by everyone. They buried hundreds of people. They tortured people. We found the grave. There were, I believe, around 500 people. When we liberated those towns near Kyiv, there emerged this, you know, this kind of hatred for the Russians, right at that moment. Not even at the moment when they started the full-scale war. Back then nobody understood what it really was yet. People understood what this war was and what Putin did personally when we found those mass graves of tortured adults, children. I mean they didn't just kill them, they tortured and killed them. When we liberated Bucha, I said, bring every journalist here. Don't touch anything, just bring the journalists. The whole world simply has to see this. Imagine finding a mass grave in the U.S. or in Britain, God forbid, with 500 tortured people, adults, kids, dogs, animals shot dead. I mean, they held hunting sprees there from military vehicles. People were running, they were shooting, just hunting, playing games. They literally just played with people, like slavery. So how, after this, can you listen to Putin? And how, after this, can you forgive? From The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. (2/3)
