Florida phosphate runs on sulfuric acid, and sulfur hit a record $705 a long ton this quarter. My FLSME talk covers the alternative: hydrochloric acid remade from salt and electricity in a membrane cell, plus the open recipe for the membrane.

A bench run using ion exchange membranes to regenerate scrubbing solution.
A scrubber catches what comes off the cell, and the loaded solution usually ends up as waste. Putting it back across a membrane is the alternative being tested here.

Cutting PVC foam board on the CNC for electrolysis cells. Toolpath on the laptop, sheet clamped to the bed, cyclone on the dust line. The panels are the cell body and the ion exchange membranes sit between them. Plain plastic and a router, nothing exotic.

Leaching shale ore, a minute of the drum running. Overhead stirrer through a cut in the lid, hose out the side, dark liquor coming off the lip into the tank. This is the front end of the loop that feeds the membrane cell. No numbers in this one.

Solder does not wet bare graphite, it beads up and rolls off. One second in lead alloy held just above its freezing point freezes a metal shell onto the rod. It shrinks on as it cools and takes ordinary solder. Under five cents a connection, open sourced.

Nine seconds inside the continuous mining unit. A look down into the open top of the cell at the dark solids sitting in the liquid, then across to the corner where the black cover meets the frame. No numbers in this one, just the hardware.

The continuous mining unit in twenty seconds: a stirrer motor over the drum, a hose linking the drum to the electrolysis cell under its black lid, and two switching power supplies below. The membrane and cell designs are published under CERN-OHL-S.

Quick walkaround of the latest upgrades to the continuous mining unit. A stirrer now runs down through a drilled plate on top of the drum, and heavy flexible ducting was added for ventilation. Twenty two seconds.

I met with with Ed Geiger with US LAUNCH REPORT yesterday! Watched the super heavy launch and had a great time. Amazing wise man, I very much respect him. Looking forward to meeting him again! He built the most amazing telescope/tracker by himself! And he operates it by hand/joystick no computers or automation!
Prusa gives away its printer designs and is still the biggest 3D printer maker in the United States. I asked Anthony Nomad of Prusa Research, co-founder of Positron 3D, how that works, then gave my own answer with charts.

Just finished up with a investor proposal and pitch deck. Reach out to [email protected] with some background of yourself/fund and I can send you these documents
One more live session from the archive, this one from May and the shortest of the set at about an hour and fifteen. Questions on salt electro mining plus general progress at the time.

Anyone else feel weird with the recent chess.com app updates. Feels ai edited
Another live Q and A from the archive, this one from June. An hour and a half of questions on ion exchange membranes and where the open source work stood at the time.

I exhibited at Open Sauce 2026 with the Ionic Age booth. Here is the full recap: what I brought, how people reacted to open source ion exchange membranes, and what I am planning for the next conventions.
