Some of the most legendary run I’ve ever witnessed in web design….
Shessshhhhh
after six and nine years respectively, me and @narrowd left L̶e̶d̶ ̶Z̶e̶p̶p̶e̶l̶i̶n̶ stripe a couple of months ago.
what we did at stripe/press over the years was a big deal for us, and i don't want to diminish it by making jokes or reducing a tough decision to "we made the difficult decision to leave". maybe we’ll write a book.
i will miss some of our enemies and all of our friends. art directing books and designing websites for @stripepress was an honor.
we will miss the chaos of it all 🫡
Currently watching this talk. Always a pleasure to listen to John Maeda.
Stilla Jedi!

Focusing on whether we should work in pixels or code diminishes the actual product of design, which is how it is experienced by others. Cycle through whichever materials and tools best serve your ability to deliver something great. It's a process.
This is a subtweet of an article that hit my feed today, which is comparing designers working in code to architects understanding the properties of marble. Sure, ok, designers need to understand the constraints and the feel of the material their work will be delivered through. That checks.
But also, Architects think about how the sun will cast shadows across the building and within the rooms of its occupants. They think about how the wind will feel in the lobby when someone opens the front door. Or on the 50th floor. They think about the 80 year old and the 8 year old, and how the building will age. And how the building creates pockets for quiet reflection and community connection. How the smell of someone's meal will waft. They think about what it will look like bustling with visitors in June, and surrounded by snowdrifts in January. And how it will feel to exit and enter throughout the year by the mom carrying groceries, the young man in a wheelchair, the boundlessly energetic 17 year old, and the retiree. And how sound travels - what should stay private and what should be shared. And the touch of a door that has been heated by the August sun…
A building is so much more than its foundation. It's material is ultimately the lives lived within it.
The same is true for digital architecture (which is only getting weirder btw as software goes headless and digital products are increasingly ambient and multi-modal/adaptive).
Diverge, converge, explore, question, write code, build journeys, touch artboards, iterate, refine All of these, and the tools where you perform them are valid in pursuit of the end goal.
Work with your full palette.

The most powerful thing you can do right now is lock in and actually change your life. Not talk about it. Not plan it. Do it. The comeback you are capable of is not just for you. It sets a standard for everyone watching and everyone who comes after you.
Hence why take them for free
@tolaolawore you're the expert on that
instagram has brainwashed an entire generation into thinking expensive international trips are a life goal, even when they don’t even own a house.
the west convinced you to fly thousands of miles, blow your savings, take 200 pictures and call it “finding yourself.”
every country has mountains, beaches and pretty streets.
western tourism propaganda is working exactly as intended.
If this is all we get fr chasing the bag, it’s worth it.

I really love the idea of a Christian who quietly fixes their walk with God and tells no one.
They just start waking up for early morning prayer. Start opening their Bible every day. Start giving quietly and generously. Start interceding for others in secret.
No post. No story update. No "look at my spiritual growth" caption.
Just a quiet transformation that only Heaven noticed the kind Jesus talked about when He said, “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
That’s the true flex. Not the public testimony. The secret-place consistency.

Technical moats are mostly over at this point. If you’re building something that is meant to be durable, the only moats now are:
• Proprietary data
• Network effects
• A physical component

I remember speaking with a friend a few months ago last year, that the trajectory of the next frontier consumer apps in Nigeria is going to be social.
The plethora of apps and build in the past couple weeks that has dominated the space has proved my point to an extent.
While fintech is still definitely a progressive industry with more feats to attain, it is safe to still say in a context that “its solved”
Better put, the payment rails and infrastructure needed to power digital economies have been put in place, the next frontier would certainly be social.
Now that people now have the means to ‘buy and sell’ online the next junction would be creating social experiences that would facilitate this and allow people interact within our own Nigerian context.
Don’t get me wrong, Twitter is great, same as Facebook and all of the Social Consumer apps from Silicon Valley but one thing is for sure they weren’t designed according to the African context or our default mental models.
We adapted or had to learn along the way but it also presents the fact that we’ve got opportunities to design social spaces on the internet in a way that is native to the Nigerian demography.
Definitely there are financial constraints to achieving this and I’m well aware of the unfriendliness of the VC firms towards new ideas that try to explore these new ideas but I’ll say the hype and buzz of last week is the validation to see that there is a missing vertical we might not be paying as much attention to
Why am I speaking on this, well it’s because I believe designers would be really pivotal and instrumental in making this happen, and by designers I don’t mean those who stop at pixel pushing alone. I mean people who would take a step away from Silicon Valley playbook and really ask ourselves what does the African or Nigerian social consumer app look like.
Now, thinking on these thoughts I had an interesting angle of thinking about how our fintechs might be even better positioned to take a shift here, and I’ll explain.
Social apps thrive on network effects, a reason to be on there because the next person is there. One social app that had almost everybody was 2go. We didn’t know ourselves but it was a melting pot. Folks could join in Unilag groups and rooms and meet new people, there was gamification with the hierarchies and all those came with certain social status within these groups.
If you think of a fintech app like say Opay, well almost everyone uses Opay. All it might take would be to design a social layer ontop its financial rails.
Now one might ask, why is this necessary.
From my observation of the Nigerian society. Social = Commerce, people weere selling on WhatsApp before WhatsApp business became a thing, people sell on twitter and all of the other social apps before these apps evolved to facilitate commerce and if we’re honest a lot of it wasn’t built with a thought for the African market necessarily, but we adapted regardless.
Now let’s take a cue from the Asian community. If we look closely We actually have more close parallel with the East than the West. And the growth of WeChat and how it supports their social and financial systems is part of what I’m driving at.
I’m not saying the social app is a Danfo game or whatever. I just have a thesis that if the financial layer has been set with the success of a number of fintechs in our ecosystem, I dare say a new layer ontop this can be the social layer. With the right mix of design [I mean both system and product], proper research on how to tap into our social structures and financial backings from money bags.
We might be able to recreate feats that Evans from Snap or Nikita from Gas achieved.
It’s a thesis and last week was validation from the digital market square (X I mean) that there might an opportunity here.
