Congratulations to the Jamia Millia Islamia students on securing a deadline to draft their Constitution. This is a meaningful win for democratic participation. My only hope is that the #Constitution they create reflects constitutional values, not religious codes or regressive social practices. It should guarantee equal rights, dignity and freedom to every individual, irrespective of gender, caste, religion or social background. A Constitution where women and men stand on equal footing. Where upper castes and lower castes enjoy the same dignity and opportunities. Where individual liberty is not compromised in the name of tradition or faith. Let it promote scientific temper, critical thinking, inclusive education, equality and progressive social values. The objective should be to prepare students for a progressive society, not educate another generation to inherit regressive mindsets. Democracy gives us the right to create institutions. Constitutional morality should guide what we create. Congratulations Once Again JMI!
