im four beers deep and i need everyone to understand that wikipedia is the last good thing. millions of strangers agreed to write down everything for free and then argue about citations forever. no ads. no paywall. this should not exist and it does and i'm crying about it

All you have to do is give a dataset they use that later disagrees with them

RTE news has a collection of Creature Features about the cryptozoological inhabitants of Irish lakes. rte.ie/archives/2016/0712/80… is the best by a country mile, the 80s music, the courtroom sketch artist...

In case you missed it, integer factorization has been proven subexponential (deterministically, worst-case bound)! The hard work comes from Claude's version of the ETH refutation but it seems a little more had to be done to get this result for integer factorization.

This is quite something ! Serbian RTV channel starts yesterday's bulletin by apologizing to viewers👇 "For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly and failed to ask necessary questions. We owe our viewers an apology”

China installed 61GW of wind and 111GW of solar power in Jan-Sep. Wind tracks last year's record pace, while solar is down from that but tracks 2023 which saw a respectable 200GW added. With energy demand growth slowing, clean energy has a good shot at covering all demand growth.

When U.S. rapper 2 Chainz sampled 84 year old Lehrer his response was "I grant you motherfuckers permission to do this. Please give my regards to Mr. Chainz, or may I call him 2?"

Best anecdote in Carol Thatcher's book about her father is when Sir Denis boarded a train at Paddington in which the only empty compartment was reserved for Rosewood Psychiatric Hospital. Denis travelled alone and in comfort as far as Reading when "all these chaps piled in", accompanied by a male nurse, who counted them before the train moved off. 'One, two, three, four ... who are you?" "I'm the Prime Minister's husband." "Six, seven, eight, nine..."

The only way out is through. They're calling it the Bugpocalypse. LLMs are being used to find long-hidden cracks in the software infrastructure, and it's happening at a furious rate. 3% of all compromises in computing history happened in the last week, claims one source? I believe it. There are people saying public access to the frontier models ought to be locked out, or heavily guardrailed, over this. The problem with that idea can be summed up in one sentence: when lockpicks are outlawed, only outlaws will have lockpicks. The lockpicks will be Chinese open-weight models, if nothing else. There's no way to stop those from becoming ubiquitous. There are two futures in front of us. One in which only the bad guys have lockpicks, and security holes go undiscovered until they're exploited. Another in which everybody has lockpicks and is aggressively red-teaming their own software so it gets fixed before the holes are exploited. The corpus of human code is huge but finite. The number of defects in it has to be finite too. We can fix those defects now; we have a million friendly robots to do it with. The only way out is through.
