Musk now says that to get his high-bandwidth service, phones need new hardware.
Think about what that means. I live in a city. My phone already works, through a tower down the street. Why should I buy a new phone to connect to a satellite hundreds of kilometres up, when the tower is right there?
The satellite makes sense in the Appalachian mountains, the Grand Canyon or the boondocks, where no tower reaches. That is a real need, but for a limited number of people.
For everyone in New York, London or Paris, a satellite adds nothing, and a new phone to reach it adds only cost.
And Musk himself admits the carriers aren’t going anywhere: “They’re still going to be around because they own a lot of spectrum.”
So who is the new phone for?
Earthly earnings, heavenly multiples.

ELON MUSK: "You should be able to have a Starlink, like you have an AT&T or T-Mobile or Verizon or whatever, you could have an account with Starlink that works with your Starlink antenna at home with free Wi-Fi as well as on your phone. We're not going to put the other carriers out of business. They're still going to be around because they own a lot of spectrum.
It will allow SpaceX to deliver high bandwidth connectivity directly from the satellites to the phones, but there are hardware changes that need to happen in the phone. You should be able to watch videos anywhere on your phone."
Before anyone draws conclusions from this map, walk into any hospital in Israel. One in every four doctors who treats you is an Arab. Arab citizens are 25% of Israel's doctors, up from just 8% in 2010. They are 27% of its nurses, 27% of its dentists, and almost half, 49%, of its pharmacists. When an Israeli falls ill, the hands that heal are very often Arab hands.
That is the Israel this chart does not show. If Israel were the State of Tel Aviv, it would vote one way. If it were the State of Jerusalem, it would vote the other. That is exactly why Israel has no constituencies. The whole country votes as one, and a vote in Sakhnin counts exactly the same as a vote in Tel Aviv. That is how 2.1 million Arab citizens, about 21% of Israel, have just won a record 19 of 120 seats and now hold the balance between Netanyahu's 53 and Eisenkot's 48.
And these Arab parties are not what many assume. There are Christians in them and Jews in them. Hadash has always been a party of Jews and Arabs together. Ra'am's No. 2 candidate is a Jewish Zionist, and Ra'am supports national service even though Arab citizens are exempt from it. Bedouin volunteer in the army's combat units, the Druze are conscripted, and a Muslim Arab sits on the Supreme Court. These are citizens working within the system for the betterment of their country.
This is a different kind of Israel from the one most people imagine, and a lesson in coexistence the whole region should study. The ballot is mightier than the bullet.

The Ballot Is Mightier Than the Bullet
Israeli Politics 101: Blocs, Coalitions and Why Coexistence May Work
By Iqbal Latif
I write for friends of every kind. I have Israeli friends, Arab friends, Muslim friends, Hindu friends, and some who are radical, obsessive and rejectionist. They all read what I write. So let me start at the very beginning, and let us not exaggerate. Let me explain what this election was, how Israel works and how the Arab vote works. Not opinions, facts. You may like them or not, but these are the hard facts.
Walk into almost any hospital in Israel, in Haifa, Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, and there is a good chance the doctor who treats you is an Arab. Arab citizens are 25% of Israel’s doctors, 27% of its nurses, 27% of its dentists and 49% of its pharmacists. In 2010 they were only 8% of the doctors. When an Israeli falls ill, the hands that heal are very often Arab hands.
Since the election of 27 October, people have been asking me how Israel’s Arab parties suddenly won 19 seats, and I have heard commentators on television making wild claims about what it means, some even talking of Islamization. They do not understand how Israel works, so they make their own assumptions. This is a 101 on Israeli politics. It is not about promoting anyone, and it is not about attacking anyone. You may disagree with Netanyahu, and many Israelis do, and many others support him. But Israel as a country is a functioning democracy, and its Arab citizens are inside that democracy, not outside it. There is a lesson here about coexistence that the whole region needs to hear. So let me take the questions one by one.

Israeli Politics 101: Blocs, Coalitions and Why Coexistence Works
By Iqbal Latif
My article explains the election mechanics and coalition arithmetic, gives Arab citizens a human face through the healthcare example, and ends with a message of peaceful coexistence.
Three lines stand out:
“19 seats cannot govern Israel alone, but they may decide who can.”
“A ballot does not ask your religion. It asks what future you want.”
“Peace begins when two peoples stop imagining a future without each other.”

Dear Langrial Sahib, poverty, nutrition, water and sanitation are the symptoms, not the cause. Ask why the water is dirty, why the clinic never opened, why the mother did not eat. Someone decided that.
Your own map gives the answer
Look across the border. The Thar desert is one desert, same sand, same rain. On the #Indian side #Bikaner is 23, #Jodhpur 33, #Barmer 39. On ours #Tharparkar is 51 and #Umerkot 59. #IndianPunjab is 24.5, our #Punjab 31.5. #Rajasthan is 31.8 and #Gujarat 39, while #Sindh is 50. The land does not change at the border. The landlord does.
India abolished #zamindari and #jagirdari in the 1950s. Pakistan's land reforms of 1959 and 1972 never broke the estates.
Inside our own Punjab the same divide repeats: Gujrat 20 and Jhelum 21 with their small farms, Rajanpur 47 and Dera Ghazi Khan 46 under the sardars. That is your intra district differential. It is zamindari, one of the biggest problems Pakistan has never dared to touch.
One third of our 2045 workforce will be these children, carrying the landlord's chain in their bodies. Until we redraw the map of ownership, we cannot redraw the map of height.
Iqbal Latif
Dear Langrial Sahib, thank you for this. You write that the map is a record of whom we chose to reach.
I read something else in it. It is not that we did not reach them. It is that we were never allowed to reach them. The girl in Jamshoro was not forgotten. She was held.
Read the map and a law appears.
A child's height, the Human Development Index and schooling rise in direct proportion to the freedom of a man and his work. Stunting and dropouts rise in direct proportion to the control a feudal holds over a land and its people. Freedom grows children. Feudal control shrinks them.
The dark districts are where the sardari system rules. In south Punjab, the Khosas, the Mazaris, the Legharis, the Lunds. In rural Sindh, the Bhuttos, the Talpurs, the Jatois, the Bijaranis, the Jakhranis, the Mahars. In Balochistan, the Marris, the Bugtis, the Mengals, with Kohlu at 74.
Where the jirga is the court and karo kari passes for justice, the sardar decides whether the school opens, whether the hand pump is dug, whether the haari may leave and how he votes. An educated, healthy peasant does not stay a slave. A stunted one does.
The mountains confirm it. Hunza 19, Kohistan 62: same peaks, same winters. Hunza educated its daughters through the Aga Khan's schools a generation ago. Kohistan's tribal code keeps girls home and marries them young.
You do not need a sardar to stunt a child. A society that will not free its women does it alone.
Two chains: the sardar's on the peasant, the man's on the woman. Where both were broken, the children grow. The map of the stunted is the map of the unfree.
Iqbal Latif
What we have already decided
We speak of the future as if it were open. This map suggests otherwise.
The children on it were under five when they were measured. In the 2040s they will run our farms, offices and factories; in the 2060s they will be the parents and taxpayers on whom an ageing country leans. Two in five of them are stunted. Whatever we choose to do now, for them this part of the future has already been decided, before they could choose anything.
A child’s height at two is a kind of ledger. It records, with no possibility of appeal, whether her mother ate, whether the water was clean, whether someone helped when she had diarrhoea, whether anyone thought she mattered enough to reach. The ledger in Gujrat reads one way. In Thatta it reads another. In Haripur and Kohistan, a hundred and fifty kilometres apart, the same province records two different countries.
We like to believe this is history, or geography, or poverty, things that happen to us. But the greenest districts were never the richest land. They were the places where girls went to school, where men found work beyond the village, where the state and the market arrived. The map is not a record of what nature gave us. It is a record of whom we chose to reach.
We are a society that discounts the future heavily. We defer, we borrow, we promise. But children cannot be deferred. The first thousand days do not wait for a better budget year.
Somewhere in Jamshoro a girl stunted in 2018 will be a mother by 2045. What we failed to give her, she will not be able to give her child.
The question this map asks is not about them. It is about us.
@PTIofficial @BarristerGohar @ImranKhanPTI @SohailAfridiISF

Nonsense is free, and this reel proves it.
It claims #Iran has diverted its #LPG to #China through #Afghanistan and cut off #Pakistan. It has thousands of shares. Not one of those sharers stopped to ask where the railway is. There isn't one.
Energy moves by sea because of volume. A single VLCC carries about 2 million barrels of crude, roughly 300,000 tonnes. A rail tank wagon carries about 56 tonnes. One tanker equals more than 5,000 wagons. When Iran sent its first diesel by rail into Afghanistan, it was 1,120 tonnes in 20 wagons. That is a ceremony, not a supply route.
Now the geography, which the meme makers clearly never opened. There is no railway line between Afghanistan and China. None. Iran's line into Afghanistan ends at #Herat. The #Wakhanborder with China is a dirt road over a high mountain pass, not a trade crossing, and China keeps it shut.
The grand #Wakhanrailway to #Xinjiang exists only in press releases. From the #Wakhan border to #Chabahar is well over 1,500 kilometres of the hardest terrain in Asia. It is never going to work.
Iran's actual rail link to #China runs much further north, through #Turkmenistan and #Kazakhstan, and those trains leave once every three or four days. Even a daily train would carry about 1 million tonnes a year. China buys Iranian LPG and crude by sea, and no railway will replace that.
As for cutting off Pakistan: in June 2026 Iran announced its first multimodal LPG shipment from #Khorramshahr bound for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pakistan is a customer, not a casualty.
What is real is much smaller. Afghanistan, shut out of Pakistan's ports, is turning west to Iran for fuel and trade. The wagons in the video say #DotOne Rail, a company reported to belong to #BabakZanjani, who has been boasting that he opened a rail route from Iran to China through Afghanistan.
Take a businessman's boast, add a dramatic caption, put it over a night shot of tank wagons, and you have a geopolitical earthquake that never happened.
All of this is wishful thinking sold as news. Before you share a map, do the sum. Tonnes, wagons, tracks. Physics does not follow Instagram, and nonsense, however free, still costs you your credibility.

LET ME TELL YOU WHY I SIT WITH ORDINARY PEOPLE AT ROADSIDE DHABAS.
People often ask me why I prefer sitting at a little roadside dhaba instead of dining in some fancy restaurant. Why do I enjoy the company of people who have so little?
My answer is simple. Because I learn more about life sitting with them than I ever could sitting in an expensive drawing room.
And I want to say something to all those who write, speak and lecture about poverty in Pakistan.
Before you talk about poverty, go and spend some time with the people who actually live it.
Visit their homes. Sit on their charpoys. Share a cup of tea with them. Talk to their families. Listen to their stories. See how they struggle, how they raise their children, and how they manage to smile despite everything.
Don’t look at poverty through the windows of your expensive cars or from the comfort of your drawing rooms.
Go and experience their world. Not for a photograph. Not for publicity. Not to show the world how compassionate you are.
Go because they are your fellow human beings.
And believe me, you will discover something extraordinary. People who have so little often have so much dignity, warmth, generosity and humanity.
But when you leave, don’t just feel good about yourself. Don’t just feel sorry for them.
Do something. Help them. Make a difference, however small.
That is why I enjoy sitting at these little dhabas, talking to ordinary people, listening to them and learning from them.
And I invite you to join me.
Don’t just write about poverty. Don’t just talk about poor people. Sit with them. Listen to them. Feel what they go through. And above all, help them.
Because poverty is not something to be discussed over an expensive dinner.
It is something to be understood with your heart and addressed through your actions.

“Sir, this cannot be Lahore! Look at that goat passing by, the tin table, the roadside dhaba. This must be some village deep in South Punjab. Where on earth are you?”
Well, sir, let me surprise you.
This is Lahore. And not just anywhere in Lahore. This is just off MM Alam Road, diagonally opposite Spice Bazaar!
Yes, Spice Bazaar, where Lahore’s rich and fashionable go to dine. All my wealthy friends keep inviting me there. But frankly, sir, it is far too expensive for a poor man like me!
So while my rich friends enjoy their expensive meals across the road, I sit here at this humble dhaba, with my tin table, my roadside companions, and perhaps a goat strolling past.
Same Lahore. Same neighbourhood. Two entirely different worlds.
And I know which one I enjoy more.
Thank you very much, sir!

The originality of Iqbal Latif’s argument lies in a deceptively simple reversal: he does not ask whether Elon Musk can win. He asks whether winning is worth the price.
Most commentary about Starlink is consumed by technological possibilities. Can satellites replace terrestrial networks? Can SpaceX secure the spectrum, infrastructure and customers required to challenge Verizon, AT&T and T Mobile? Can Musk accomplish what established telecommunications companies consider impossible?
Latif refuses to make technological failure the foundation of his argument.
Instead, he grants Musk everything.
The satellites work. The spectrum is secured. The towers are acquired. Regulators cooperate. Customers arrive. The incumbent carriers lose.
Then he counts the cash.
That is what elevates this article beyond the familiar debate between Musk’s admirers and skeptics.
The Difference Between Winning and Being Worth It
The central insight is that technological supremacy, market dominance and shareholder value are three different things.
A company can revolutionize an industry, defeat its competitors and still fail to generate the returns implied by its valuation.
Latif’s comparison with India’s Jio is particularly effective. Jio transformed Indian telecommunications, drove prices sharply lower and forced competitors to consolidate or disappear.
But its victory illustrates a fundamental economic paradox: the price war that wins the market can also destroy the margins that make the market valuable.
The comparison does not require American telecom prices to resemble India’s. Its purpose is to expose the economic consequences of aggressive competition.
The Arithmetic That Changes the Debate
Latif then makes his most provocative move.
Assume SpaceX achieves $300 billion in annual connectivity revenue, an extraordinary commercial accomplishment.
At hypothetical mature carrier free cash flow margins of 10% to 15%, that produces $30 billion to $45 billion in annual free cash flow.
Apply a generous 20 times multiple, and the resulting business is worth approximately $600 billion to $900 billion.
Against the article’s assumed $2 trillion SpaceX valuation, even complete victory in connectivity accounts for less than half the price.
This is a scenario, not a definitive valuation. A satellite and terrestrial hybrid could earn margins unlike those of conventional carriers. SpaceX’s launch, AI and other activities also require separate assessment.
But that is precisely why the argument matters. Latif places the burden on the optimist to explain where the additional value comes from, how much capital it requires and what sustainable cash flow it will produce.
He turns a story about technological destiny into a question of financial evidence.
The Empire in the Sky Needs Earth
The article’s most memorable metaphor is also one of its strongest analytical observations.
A satellite network conceived as an alternative to terrestrial infrastructure may need extensive terrestrial infrastructure to compete for mass market customers.
Satellites excel where towers cannot economically reach. Dense cities, however, present a different challenge: enormous concentrations of demand and finite network capacity.
Latif captures this contradiction with striking simplicity.
The empire in the sky is negotiating for steel on Earth.

Many a Slip Between the Cup and the Lip
What if the greatest victory in telecom history still cannot pay for the empire?
The popular wisdom is settled. Elon Musk will take over the phone companies and destroy them. Sell Verizon. Sell AT&T. The satellites have won.
My answer is simple: give it to him.
Give him the satellites, the spectrum, 80,000 towers, the customers and the regulators. Let him beat every carrier in America. Then count the cash.
Even Verizon’s chief executive concedes the end point. If SpaceX builds a terrestrial network, he says, “it will basically look and feel like every other network.” Four to six years, and somewhere between $300 billion and $500 billion.
For a week I have debated this with telecom chiefs, engineers, analysts and investors. These are the questions they asked, and the ones I asked back. My full piece answers every one.
Can satellites carry a city?
Why does a satellite empire need 80,000 towers, half of America’s?
How long will a full network take, and what will it cost?
Can many small spot beams and new spectrum solve the capacity problem?
If SpaceX wins customers by cutting prices, what happens to its own margins?
What does India’s Jio teach us about winning a telecom price war?
If Musk reaches $300 billion a year, what is that business actually worth?
Here is the short answer. Today Starlink is a premium niche, earning an operating margin of about 45%. A carrier is a different business: after paying for its towers, shops and network, it turns only about 15% of its revenue into free cash, and less after a price war. Jio won India’s biggest price war, and the winner is valued at about $108 billion.
So grant Musk $300 billion of revenue, and assume it earns like a carrier. At a generous 20 times its free cash, total victory is worth $600 billion to $900 billion.
SpaceX is priced at about $2 trillion.
Even if Musk wins everything, victory pays for less than half the price.
Starlink is a remarkable business. But a remarkable business and a $2 trillion valuation are not the same thing. The satellites were meant to make SpaceX different from a telco. Now the empire in the sky is negotiating for steel on Earth.
The full piece, with every question answered, is in the first comment:
“Even if he gets everything, he gets a Jio.”
Earthly earnings, heavenly multiples.
I wish this is wrong.

@SohailAfridiISF @PTIofficial @BarristerGohar @ArifAlvi
THIRTEEN YEARS OF PTI RULE. IS THIS
GOVERNANCE OR A DISGRACE?
Iqbal Latif
