“My parents could barely read or write. It’s been quite a journey, science allows you to do it.” New laureate Omar Yaghi was in the middle of changing flights when we reached him, just after he heard that he had been awarded the 2025 #NobelPrize in Chemistry. In this interview we speak about his early life as a refugee in Jordan and the overwhelming draw of the beauty of chemistry: “I set out to build beautiful things and solve intellectual problems.” Listen now:

I echo Claudio’s words and want to highlight what an amazing advisor and truly inspiration Pancho has been for us doing PhD in Economics in PUC Chile…which I’m sure he will continue doing ✨
Today Francisco Gallego sites.google.com/view/franci… leaves his position as scientific diretor for @JPAL_LAC after 16 years. Hard to describe everything he did for research and policy evaluation in Chile and LatAm in general in all those years. Gracias Pancho!

Excited to share my latest research published in the JDE! I investigated how the composition of groups by risk for violence affects outcomes in after-school programs (ASPs). Here is the link followed by a thread: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

I provide evidence of two explanations. First, the interaction between student's own and peers' propensity for violence: The exposure to low-risk peers benefits high-risk students, while exposure to high-risk peers does not harm low-risk students.

Second, group composition by violence is a bundled intervention that includes mean + variance, which have opposite effects on outcomes. Specifically, a higher mean of peers’ risk for violence worsens outcomes, while a higher variance improves them.
