Yes, bats live and hunt for insects over the ocean. Species capable of long-distance movements regularly fly over coastal and marine environments, especially during seasonal migrations. Acoustic bat detectors and automated tracking systems can be placed on offshore infrastructure to monitor their movement, information that scientists use to understand potential impacts of offshore activities.

The journey of an offshore platform might surprise you. Some platforms travel great distances before reaching their destination in the Gulf of America. We were involved at every stage to make sure the platform is ready for safe operations. Discover how far these platforms travel before they begin producing energy.

Preparedness starts long before an incident. On National First Responders Day, we honor the teams whose training and commitment make offshore safety possible. We support response crews through industry training, exercises, and unannounced drills to ensure they’re ready when it’s needed.

Emerging oil spill response tools? Yeah, we’ve got those. Remotely operated vessels? That too. Boom systems and UAS technology that boost situational awareness and support faster decision making? Yup, you can count on us for those as well. Our experts joined the Gulf Response Alliance Conference in Austin to showcase these technologies and innovations. By testing and demonstrating them before an incident occurs, the response community can better understand how to use them when they matter most.

Our engineers and inspectors traveled to Singapore to conduct a preproduction inspection of Shell’s Sparta platform. Next stop: Texas, where the team will complete additional preparation and conduct another inspection before Sparta heads offshore to the Gulf of America.

JUST ANNOUNCED| The Marine Minerals Administration announced the Final Leasing Notice for Lease Sale PACM-1 offshore American Samoa, scheduled for November 19, 2026. The sale supports early mapping for critical mineral resources that could support developing technologies. Activities authorized by a lease sale only include collecting information about the seafloor and ocean, to support the development of future plans. MMA will oversee a multistage regulatory process before any physical exploration or testing can begin. More in the news release: boem.gov/newsroom/press-rele…

We joined OCEANS 2026 in Monterey, California, for a research town hall where panelists introduced the Marine Minerals Administration and took questions on technical work, partnerships, and interagency coordination. The session showed how strong science and collaboration supports offshore safety, energy security and improves decision-making for local communities.

Offshore safety doesn't end when a storm passes. Following Hurricane Isaias, we continued monitoring offshore conditions and coordinating with operators as they assessed facilities and worked to safely restore operations. Safety remains our priority.

Shale yeah, we’re into fossils! They help restore Carolina beaches. To find sands for beach replenishment,we develop predictive maps that depend on fossils to date sediment layers and types. In partnership with SC DNR Geological Survey and USGS, fossil analysis helps refine the maps that ultimately put sand back on the beach. Castle time!

In Louisiana this week, @SecretaryBurgum met with our Gulf of America Region team and encouraged them to bring a “Yes…If” mindset to drive responsible energy and mineral development here at home. Our work helps keep energy supplies steady, protects our coasts, and supports communities nationwide. Strong American standards mean safer, cleaner, more reliable results. And real change happens when people step forward to solve problems. Our greatest resource isn’t beneath the Outer Continental Shelf. It’s the skill, commitment, and problem‑solving mindset of the people who manage it.

The Marine Minerals Administration is monitoring offshore oil and gas operators in the Gulf of America in response to Hurricane Isaias. MMA will work with offshore operators and state and federal agencies until operations return to normal, and the storm is no longer a threat. Standard shut‑in procedures are in place to protect workers, equipment, and the environment. MMA will continue providing daily updates.
