What fundamentally separates humans from every other living being is that we have an inner world of thought that we can consciously project outward. meaning we can take the objects around us and turn them into subjects, shape them according to our own mind. that’s what separates humans from all other life forms and that’s what being human means (plus, connected to that, humans can ask the question of their own existence). Since industrialization there’s been something marx called alienation (inspired by hegel here). people get mental crises, depression etc. because they have no connection to their work anymore. The human doesn’t create anything himself anymore, he stands at the assembly line doing one single motion, or sits in an office filling out spreadsheets. the real process of creation from start to finish, like a guild master had in the middle ages, is lost for the vast majority. stuff like consumption or doom scrolling makes people unhappy, or at least not satisfied long term, because it doesn’t fulfill our uniquely human need. hegel talked about the master slave dialectic here. it looks like the master is superior because he only consumes while the slave has to create the products for his consumption. but a dependency develops inside that, because the slave himself becomes master over nature, since he reshapes nature according to his mind, while the master is only driven by his lower instincts, consumes, and degenerates into an animal, a slave to his animalistic side. What i’m getting at: consumption in capitalism is not an end in itself. through luxury brands it serves to show “i made it” through work, intelligence, hard work you are better than others and you prevailed. so it’s about showing that through the thing that makes you human (reshaping your surroundings according to your mind) you were more “human” than others, that you’re superior to others in human qualities and stand at the top. that’s why you see people from the third world who come from newly rich generations have such a tendency toward luxury. People born privileged sometimes convince themselves it was their hard work and not their parents’ money and contacts, or in other cases they’re ashamed of their rich identity and become woke culture warriors because of it. Same with poor classes flexing with luxury to show they made it or can make it up the hierarchy (gangster rap subculture for example). The point is AI won’t abolish this human essence. creative processes will change, but consumption won’t replace them. There will be a renewed appreciation for handmade things, people will use their time more (if they’re not at the subsistence level fighting to survive) for more creative, intellectual activities etc.
