“Civic and political unionism is not adjusting well to the new dynamics of life in the North. A statement of the obvious. The fragmentation evident throughout unionism is best viewed as a desperate reaction to success.” - Professor Colin Harvey

If you’re looking a 2 minute description, on what the GAA really means, Ciara Mageean and her experience of All-Ireland final day hits home. She’s the best of us.

Two polls this weekend. This is what a United Ireland would look like tomorrow.

My favorite picture of Ciara Mageean.
So rooted to her community and home place.
The very best of what it is to be Irish.

Ciara Mageean died this morning. A light has gone out in the world. Authentic, talented, decent. Her kindness and wonderful personality was a joy to watch and see. Then came her iconic sporting achievements.
When we sat down with Ciara for the GAA Social in July, she received disappointing news the day before. Ciara didn’t want to cancel, so we recorded on the Tuesday. It’s 90 minutes Oisin & myself will always treasure. She was the best of us.
To Thomas, I’m so sorry. She was mad about you. To the Mageean family, all her great friends and the Portaferry community- what a stunning human being, to call one of your own. This is so unfair.
I’ve never met a person who met Ciara, who didn’t love her. A one off.

Heartbreaking to hear that Ciara Mageaan has passed away this morning.
A champion in every sense of the word and a role model for all athletes.
She represented her country with pride and helped put Irish athletics on the map. An Olympian and European Champion showed the clear talent she had.
And just like her sport, she faced her cancer diagnosis with bravery and determination.
Ciara's legacy will live on and she will continue to be an inspiration to many.
To her husband, Thomas, her family and friends our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Dead at 34. She blazed a trail across the tracks & into our hearts. The athletics world will be stunned by the speed of her demise from cancer. As we all were by Ciara’s speed & courage.A European champion who made everyone in Ireland proud. From the North, she belonged to us all.
“Nothing made Ciara prouder than pulling on her Ireland vest. But as a proud Portaferry woman, she wasn’t just a champion on the track. She was a champion of others who showed us all how to live. A privilege to have had her on the Late Late Show.”
A message from @PatricKielty on the passing of Ciara Mageean 🤍

Pope Leo XIV bringing the jokes meeting with Villanova and Notre Dame 😂:
“Growing up on the south side of Chicago, we oftentimes heard, “Go Irish!”
But, as you all know, Prevost graduated from Villanova.
So the Pope doesn't take sides.
Prevost has another opinion, but we won't do that now.”

Colin Harvey putting it right up to the Irish government.
Time for more of this straight talking.
Fair play to @cjhumanrights !
"I'll tell you who's missing from the discussion at the moment - the Irish Government."
- @cjhumanrights on what he feels is a lack of political leadership when it comes to working towards a United Ireland.

Jonathan Buckley’s letter is intriguing for a number of reasons. Not least because he appears to be inviting his own party leader to a summit of unionist leaders that Buckley himself seems to want to convene.

Have the Happy Lundys worked their magic and turned the Taoiseach into a United Irelander? Better late than never😀
We Happy Lundys can’t take all the credit for @MichealMartinTD announcement about Irish Govt planning for Irish Unity. But I’m sure giving him copies of these books at QUB helped a bit 😉 #happylundys #irishunity @IrelandsFuture @irishborderpoll @ClaireMitchell2 @LuathPress

I welcome the Irish Government’s announcement of this important step forward on the road to Irish unity.
This is an opportunity we must seize. Preparations must now move forward with urgency, with the resources, ambition and inclusive approach needed to shape our shared future.
This process must be inclusive from the outset, with everyone having a meaningful opportunity to contribute and have their say in shaping the future of our island.

Jon Burrows says he’s “deeply uncomfortable” that so many people vote for Sinn Féin.
It’s called democracy, Jon.
The people decide who they vote for and who serves as First Minister - not you, and not the UUP.
The days of domination are over.
