as a kid, I was obsessed with geography.
now with chat’s intelligent UI, i get to continue learning about the places i get to travel to - like recently to Maui with interactive diagrams of its microclimates and its inversion compared to SF’s! go try it out!

Our goal was to push the Pareto frontier of perceived latency and utility. I like this graph because it shows that GPT-6 Extra High begins writing its answer at the speed of GPT-5.6 Medium while outperforming GPT-5.6 Extra High on an internal consumer agentic eval.

following up after astra launch week and the navier-stokes announcement i wanted to share a little bit about how we think about and build for the over 1 billion people who use chatgpt every week, most of whom use it for free. we’re on a mission to distribute the benefits of agi, and i think this is the most impactful way to do that: giving people as much access as we can safely and feasibly distribute. we want to scale the utility that everyone gets from ai.
over the past 6 months, we've been working to bring the greatest possible capabilities to the broadest possible set of users, including both free and paying users. of course there are some practical limitations and we can’t ship the largest models to everyone, but since march (gpt-5.3 instant), we’ve improved the default chatgpt experience meaningfully:
- responses with a major factual error are down 65%, and they are down 72% in high stakes categories like finance
- gpt-5.6 sol at instant and gpt-5.6 luna at medium are smarter than o3 at high reasoning effort, our frontier reasoning model from 17 months ago, while being considerably faster, 30%+ faster time to last token (evaluated via GPQA diamond)
- chatgpt is far more usable and enjoyable while bringing extreme sycophancy down 80% and overall sycophancy down 83%
- on our high-stakes medical eval, chatgpt produced 83% fewer answers flagged for hallucinations, resulting in hundreds of millions of better health conversations per month
- we're seeing people find more ways to use chatgpt. for a recently joined cohort, we saw the number of use cases pursued at least three times weekly go up 20-30%
not only have we improved the default chatgpt experience dramatically, we’ve also expanded access significantly for all. free users now:
- have access to unlimited text chats
- can use higher reasoning effort
- now have access to automations, letting them schedule tasks to happen later
- have access to better memory through dreaming. this allows chat to personalize much more effectively
we’re always looking for ways to expand access to the billion+ people who use our product weekly. this is the master plan: bring the default experience as close to the capability frontier as possible, expand access to everyone, making intelligence maximally abundant, and make our product much more usable.
this last point, usability, is something we’ve been focusing on as we bring personal agi to everyone. the current top of the line capabilities are staggering, but only the savviest users and insiders know how to use them. our vision is of a progressive, model assisted, onboarding to agi. chatgpt will guide people from all walks of life to the highest utility applications of ai for them. this really is the only way – we think technology that is hard to learn ultimately fails to reach a broad audience. your personal agi will just understand your goals, and automatically use the right set of features and capabilities to get things done for you
lots more to come soon. onwards to scaling utility for all

GPT-5 is here! 🚀
For the first time, users don’t have to choose between models — or even think about model names. Just one seamless, unified experience.
It’s also the first time frontier intelligence is available to everyone, including free users!
GPT-5 sets new highs across academic, coding, and multimodal reasoning — and is our most trustworthy, accurate model yet. Faster, more reliable, and safer than ever.
All in a seamless, unified experience with the tools you already love.
Fortunate to have led the effort to make GPT-5 a truly unifed experience, and thrilled to have helped bring this milestone to life with an amazing team!

Today we release gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b—two open-weight LLMs that deliver strong performance and agentic tool use.
Before release, we ran a first of its kind safety analysis where we fine-tuned the models to intentionally maximize their bio and cyber capabilities 🧵

Today we launched a new product called ChatGPT Agent.
Agent represents a new level of capability for AI systems and can accomplish some remarkable, complex tasks for you using its own computer. It combines the spirit of Deep Research and Operator, but is more powerful than that may sound—it can think for a long time, use some tools, think some more, take some actions, think some more, etc. For example, we showed a demo in our launch of preparing for a friend’s wedding: buying an outfit, booking travel, choosing a gift, etc. We also showed an example of analyzing data and creating a presentation for work.
Although the utility is significant, so are the potential risks.
We have built a lot of safeguards and warnings into it, and broader mitigations than we’ve ever developed before from robust training to system safeguards to user controls, but we can’t anticipate everything. In the spirit of iterative deployment, we are going to warn users heavily and give users freedom to take actions carefully if they want to.
I would explain this to my own family as cutting edge and experimental; a chance to try the future, but not something I’d yet use for high-stakes uses or with a lot of personal information until we have a chance to study and improve it in the wild.
We don’t know exactly what the impacts are going to be, but bad actors may try to “trick” users’ AI agents into giving private information they shouldn’t and take actions they shouldn’t, in ways we can’t predict. We recommend giving agents the minimum access required to complete a task to reduce privacy and security risks.
For example, I can give Agent access to my calendar to find a time that works for a group dinner. But I don’t need to give it any access if I’m just asking it to buy me some clothes.
There is more risk in tasks like “Look at my emails that came in overnight and do whatever you need to do to address them, don’t ask any follow up questions”. This could lead to untrusted content from a malicious email tricking the model into leaking your data.
We think it’s important to begin learning from contact with reality, and that people adopt these tools carefully and slowly as we better quantify and mitigate the potential risks involved. As with other new levels of capability, society, the technology, and the risk mitigation strategy will need to co-evolve.
