This proud moment reminds me of Malala’s famous Pashto tappa:
“Whether the men can or cannot, the girls will win for you, dear homeland!”
Our girls are proving that when given opportunities, they don’t just change their own lives — they change the world!
Malala Fund’s Shangla Girls School and College won 1st place at the Islamabad Science Festival, their first time competing against schools from across Pakistan.
Their project, “Safe Mine: Smart Helmet for Safe Mining,” is dedicated to the coal miners who recently lost their lives.
When girls have a school, good teachers and a real chance to compete, they build solutions that protect people. Proud of you, girls. Keep going!

Thank you, Dr Nishat. Your work on what keeps girls in school shaped the argument. The Peshawar girls needed a teacher's improvisation. Education departments across the country can make it a standard - here’s the post-event feedback from a girl student from Hyderabad student who won second place at the @ISBScienceFest 🙌🏾

A million AI professionals by 2030 means about 250,000 a year. Every one of them is a child in a classroom today.
Pakistan has the policy: a youth programme (@PMsYouthProgram), a 4E framework, an AI target. What it lacks is a way to find capable children in government institutions and put their work in front of people who can use it.
Our @ISBScienceFest this month brought 30 institutions, at least 117 students, 51 of them girls, from six regions. Balochistan sent no team. Two girls from Peshawar stayed for day two only because a teacher convinced their parents and put them up at her sister's home.

Stakeholders call for dedicated STEAM policy, budget in Sindh
Education stakeholders have called for a dedicated STEAM policy and budget in Sindh to integrate practical, innovation-based learning into mainstream schooling.
At a policy dialogue organised by the School Education and Literacy Department’s Reform Support Unit and Thar Education Alliance, Secretary Education Zahid Ali Abbasi reaffirmed support for STEAM initiatives and announced the recruitment of 8,500 science teachers.
Students from Sindh showcased their science models from the Islamabad Science Festival, while Gauth AI subscriptions were awarded to festival winners for three years and provided to participating students and teachers for one year.

Girls took the main stage at ISF - we are so proud of these girls in STEM making us all a fan of their creativity, curiosity, and commitment.
You all are the reason - the real force behind us to ensure we deliver solid platforms for you to showcase your talent to the world.
Here’s to organising and establishing better and bigger platforms for you all. #GirlsInST #MadeInPakistan #ISF2026

Two students from a government girls' college in Azad Kashmir built one model with three projects, showing how AJK can generate power from wind, sun and water.
Their plan matches each source to a place. Wind goes to the highlands of Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot and the open areas of Neelum Valley. Solar goes to Mirpur and Kotli, where sunlight is plentiful. Hydropower comes from the dams, including Mangla.
Their message at ISF 2026 was to promote renewable energy over non-renewable sources.

A girl from a government school in Hyderabad told the Chairman of the Prime Minister's Youth Programme Rana Mashhood sb that she wants to be Education Minister.
She was one of the students at the @ISBScienceFest, where 9,000 people came over two days to see government-school students from across Pakistan, including AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, on one stage for the first time.
Girls from Shangla won the school category with a safety model for the coal miners of their own district. Three of the four government schools Sindh sent placed on the podium, among them the Hyderabad girls' school named a global top-10 finalist for the World's Best School Prizes 2026. A student from the University of Narowal won the university category with AI that generates contrast MRI from non-contrast scans. A boy from Korangi built a rain-sound instrument from nails, rice and beans from his father's refrigerator workshop.
Each project began with a problem close to home: the danger facing coal miners in Shangla, the cost of a contrast injection in Narowal, a father's workshop in Korangi. PMYP will now partner with @Campaignistan to take ISF international, and Balochistan is next.
Thank you to Federal Information Minister @TararAttaullah sb, Chairman @PMsYouthProgram @ranamashhood sb, @EduMinistryPK, the provincial education departments, @TharEduAlliance, @ImaratPK, and @MalalaFundPK 🙌🏾

A proud moment for Tharparkar as Tanish, Kapil, and Ravi, talented students of GBHS Malanhore Vena, adopted by Thar Education Alliance (TEA), secured 2nd position at the Islamabad Science Festival!
Their innovative model brought together ideas for post-flood rehabilitation, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through stakeholder collaboration, and harnessing Tharparkar’s immense green energy potential. Their vision and creativity captured public attention, showcasing how young minds can turn local challenges into solutions for a sustainable future.
Returning home with a national achievement, Tanish, Kapil, and Ravi received a heartwarming welcome from their teachers, fellow students, and the local community a moment filled with pride, applause, and inspiration.
Islamabad Science Festival 2026 · School Category results 🏆
A girls' school from Shangla, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whose men go down coal mines across Pakistan, built a mine-safety system. It took first place.
21 government schools competed from across the country. Three of the four schools Sindh sent finished in the top three. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa secured first and shared third place with AJK and Sindh.
🥇 Shangla Girls School and College, Shangla, KP · Safe Mine
🥈 GBHS Malanhore Veena, Mithi, Tharparkar · Green Tech Resilience
🥈 GGHS Hyderabad, Sindh · Shield Sindh
🥉 GHSS Naudeh Payan, Peshawar · Auto Fire Response
🥉 GGHS Bankhurma, Mirpur, AJK · Parking System
🥉 GBHS Talib ul Moula Kunri Memon, Umerkot · Eco Vita Village
Two schools tied for second. Three tied for third. The jury could not separate them.
Talent is evenly distributed across Pakistan. Platforms are not. That gap is why ISF exists.
Congratulations to every student, teacher and parent behind these projects.

@Narowaluni
Virtual Gadolinium: the project that won first place in the universities category at Islamabad Science Festival 2026. 🥇
It comes from Samar Abbas of the @Narowaluni, who built it as his final year project under the supervision of Zaeem Nazir. An MRI scan often needs a gadolinium-based contrast injection so doctors can see the area clearly. Samar explains that the injection is a risk for some patients, including those with kidney disease, is not available in many local hospitals, and is costly for middle-class families.
His AI-driven approach generates contrast-enhanced MRI images from non-contrast scans, with the goal of reducing the need for the injection in suitable cases. It is research and a software prototype, not a clinical tool.
It also comes from a public university that Federal Minister @PlanComPakistan Professor Ahsan Iqbal (@betterpakistan) founded in Narowal - current enrolment at 7,000 students, 5,000 of them women.
ISF exists to put work like this on a national stage, free for every student of a government institution.
