The fundamental change that Cardoso is talking about that informed their decision is that increase in export earnings.
The high interest rate not only curtailed inflation but also attracted forex inflow via FPI that helped stabilize the Naira.
Right now, we are seeing an increase in the percentage share of export earnings compared to total forex inflow.
And when you analyse the export data itself, we are seeing increase in the percentage share of non oil export. That in itself shows improved resilience for the market. CBN argument is that the above should act as a buffer for any potential FPI that may be lost.
FPI inflow is still significant. We are looking at a percentage share of 22%, compared to total inflow. Nonetheless, Nigeria still carries a positive real interest rate that is more significant when compared to global market.
