I wrote about attention, the mathematical operation that enables LLMs to process language at scale. Devised by Dzmitry Bahdanau in 2014, the trick was supercharged in the famous paper "Attention Is All You Need." I ask: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 is it all you need? Is it? quantamagazine.org/is-attent…

How much of published finance holds up? I attempted to replicate the main result of every paper in JF, JFE & RFS, 2000–2020. 1,328 in-sample replications; 1,005 out-of-sample. 75% reproduced in sample. But only 42% in later data. Median coeff. : 0.93 → 0.45 of the published.

Today #Bulgaria commemorates the victims of the totalitarian Communist regime. For 45 years the Red terror altered the lives of over 1 million Bulgarians - from killing and torture to denying them work, education and meaningful social life. Never again!

Amazing, I will read with interest. I leafed through the Balkan crusades and the book seems to points to some initial root causes for the fall of the Balkans to the Ottomans such as the immense political fragmentation. Spot on, great work

This reminds me of an old Soviet joke (context: Cossacks were a prototypical “tough guy” in Soviet jokes). A Soviet official from the city was visiting the far east and being shown around by a Cossack. They run a red light. The official asks the Cossack, why didn’t you stop? Offended, the Cossack replies: we are a proud and strong people, why would we stop just because a light asks us to? They keep driving, and then stop at a green light. The official asks, why did you stop, the light is green? The Cossack: oh we have to stop. There might be another Cossack driving through and we don’t want to get hit. Nice illustration of equilibrium :)
We’ve evolved a social norm post pandemic in which one more car is allowed to cross after the light turns red, and then you wait a second longer when it’s green to avoid hitting this car. Which, I guess is sustainable as long as everyone follows

Normally, it's: 1) write a paper & submit 3) get reviews (~3 months) 4) revise paper & resubmit 5) wait for response (~3 months) ...what if we could simulate this process in minutes? Could we fix issues? Anticipate misconceptions? Get ideas for new analyses/experiments? 1/

For some clarity Petar Bogdan Bakshev (Petrus Deodatus) is a Bulgarian catholic Archbishop from the town of Chiprovtsi (northwest Bulgaria) who wrote the first Bulgarian 🇧🇬 history in Latin ca. 1667: 'De antiquitate Paterni soli, et de rebus Bulgaricis ad suos Compatriotas'
