Less than 2% of U.S. grid power can be stored. Across most of the world, that number is even lower. If we are going to transform the grid and meet surging power demand, we need scalable battery storage that can operate safely at industrial scale. Solid lithium halides could replace the flammable liquid electrolytes inside today's batteries, but finding the right material requires knowing how quickly ions travel through the crystal lattice. Measuring that on a computer means running molecular dynamics simulations above 1,000 Kelvin to speed up rare ion hops. At those temperatures, halide lattices become dynamically soft, distorting far from equilibrium. While foundational models handle stable crystals well, their energy predictions break down in these distorted states. In collaboration with NVIDIA, we built AQVolt26: 322,656 r²SCAN density functional theory calculations, selectively sampled from more than 200 million high-temperature lithium halide configurations. This is a Large Quantitative Model (LQM) that has peer-reviewed published benchmarks and outperforms other models. On strained halide structures, energy error drops to 15 to 24 meV/atom when co-training the eSEN architecture on AQVolt26, compared to 52 to 85 meV/atom without it. The models also become more conservative on ionic conductivity, cutting down on false positives before a single material is synthesized in the physical lab. That is quantitative AI at work. Train on the physics of the problem, and the LQM holds up where discovery actually happens.

More than 80% of the economy depends on quantitative relationships. Numbers and equations drive sectors such as energy, biopharma, defense, chemicals and finance. These sectors need AI models trained on quantitative data that is grounded in the real world, not downloaded from social media. This is the domain of Large Quantitative Models (LQMs). Look at the life sciences sector. We work with drug companies to identify biomarkers in clinical development. Our quantitative models leverage a multi-layer system including knowledge graphs and neural networks to identify promising drug candidates and derisk them before heading to clinical trials. The same approach applies to energy. We work with energy and chemical companies to develop novel catalysts which drive new products and revenues. We also developed a method to break down PFAS which prevents these harmful chemicals from reaching our soil and streams. LQMs are the models that shift AI from just saving money to making more revenue. Be sure to follow as we share what’s next for quantitative AI.

Energy is the lifeblood of AI. @AnthropicAI recently committed ~$450 billion to cloud and energy infrastructure over the next decade. To meet this massive demand, the energy sector must fundamentally change how it conducts R&D. Legacy simulation and physical trial-and-error are simply too slow for the current energy transition. The breakthrough happening today is the rise of Large Quantitative Models (LQMs). Instead of using AI to generate text, LQMs train non-transformer architectures directly on the laws of physics and chemistry. At @SandboxAQ, we are using these models to shift industrial R&D from guesswork to deterministic simulation: - Delivering a 1000x speedup in CFD for a major global energy company - Screening catalysts at near-DFT accuracy with our AQCat LQM model - Discovering novel battery chemistries, leading to our recent CHIPS and Science Act award Next week, the world's energy giants gather at ADIPEC. Those who adopt physics-based AI will be the ones to capture the massive revenue opportunities created by the global energy transition. I sat down with CNN at ADIPEC last year to break down exactly how this convergence of AI and energy is playing out in the physical world:

A list of ingredients won't tell you how to bake a cake. You need the complete recipe to understand how to combine all the ingredients, in what order, at what temperature etc. Industrial catalysis and chemical discovery work in a similar way. Catalysts are fundamental to more than 80% of the manufacturing and industrial world. They speed up reactions, reduce the energy needed, and then remain to be recharged and reused for the next reaction cycle. To develop a new catalyst, it is not enough just to specify a bunch of atoms that comprise the catalyst molecule. We have to account for magnetic spin, electronic fidelity, surface restructuring, and more parameters, all of which have an impact on the ability of a catalyst to do its job. Each of these variables shifts binding energies and activation barriers, ultimately deciding whether a catalyst performs efficiently or fails under stress. This matters most for earth-abundant metals like iron, cobalt, and nickel, which drive massive industrial processes like ammonia and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Their strong spin polarization is exactly what most large-scale catalysis datasets leave out, simply because spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations are too computationally expensive. Our core team at @SandboxAQ addressed that gap with AQCat25, introducing a dataset of 13.5 million DFT single-point calculations alongside spin-aware machine learning interatomic potentials. By explicitly training the models on magnetic spin and computational fidelity, we improved accuracy on these complex magnetic systems without sacrificing generalizability.

We are now entering the reality of AI fighting AI. At the time of the @OpenAI breach at Hugging Face in July, we warned that AI cyber attacks were only going to get worse. That prediction is playing out across the enterprise the past few weeks. Security researchers just discovered threat actors deploying open-source autonomous agents to relentlessly probe and breach more than 1,200 corporate networks, impacting major manufacturers like @JohnDeere and @SharkNinja @QuestDX also confirmed a cybersecurity breach that compromised sensitive patient records. Employees are granting unsanctioned AI tools unchecked access to corporate environments, and a major AI aggregator breach this week exposed terabytes of confidential enterprise data uploaded outside of IT oversight. Organizations must move past legacy perimeter security and establish military-grade air gapping alongside dynamic, model-driven defenses. We cannot just wait for the next incident to happen. Recognizing that containment has broken down is the first step toward building true resilience.

Even as #Quantum computers are advancing in qubit quality and error correction, we need to improve the algos that run on QPUs. This paper uses #AI to advance these algos.

AI agents can be very beneficial, but they can also wreak havoc with cybersecurity and token budgets.   Security teams are having difficulty auditing what agents are doing. CFOs cannot tie agent spend to clear outcomes. When an unmonitored agent leaks customer data, executes unverified code, or racks up unbudgeted compute costs across thousands of API calls, it becomes a major liability. That is why we expanded the SandboxAQ Switch platform with Switch Trust and Switch ROI. With Switch Trust, enterprise teams can discover every agent running across their environment, run adversarial tests against prompt injection and data leaks before deployment, and enforce real-time guardrails in production With Switch ROI, organizations can tie agent compute spending directly to measurable business outcomes rather than counting raw tokens, allowing teams to dynamically optimize model performance without sacrificing security. Whether deploying medical software tools in clinical settings or streamlining energy logistics, putting autonomous AI agents to work requires continuous governance and clear accountability. Switch is open source and free to use. Check it out here: switchagents.ai/

The biggest breakthrough in biopharma AI will be eliminating weak drug candidates before companies spend years developing them. In 2027 leading biopharma companies will begin using quantitative models to make earlier decisions about which molecules deserve investment. The result will be a fundamental shift in how the industry measures R&D productivity.

The physical world has zero margin for error. When a patient is rolled into the ER with chest pain, a surgeon needs diagnostic certainty within minutes. When an energy company spends $1 billion deploying battery storage, that chemistry must be flawless. For an AI output to be useful in the real world, it must be driven by reality. Large Language Models (LLMs) are incredible conversational interfaces, but the physical world requires Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) running the physics behind the scenes. LQMs run high-scale simulations constrained by real-world variables such as shelf stability, and manufacturability. Without those physical constraints, we risk sending engineers down a year-long R&D path that works in theory but fails in a factory. This is why we partnered with @AnthropicAI to bring Claude together with @SandboxAQ's LQMs: Combining intuitive conversational AI with science-grounded physics.
