Did you know that on October 30, 1950, the U.S. military bombed Jayuya? It wasn’t an isolated event. It was part of a long pattern of violence and oppression against Puerto Rican nationalism. The events of El Grito de Jayuya show how far the government was willing to go to silence the fight for independence, and how hard that history was kept out of sight. Remembering it is part of telling our story. 📸: Center for Puerto Rican Studies-Centro #OnThisDay #Jayuya #BlancaCanales #PuertoRicanHistory

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! Taíno blood still lives in us: in our DNA, our words, our food, and our neighborhood's name. 🇵🇷 In 2024, our state-designated cultural district on Division St, formerly Puerto Rico Town, was renamed Barrio Borikén to honor the island's Indigenous heritage. The dedication featured an AREYTO, an ancestral song and dance, performed by the Concilio Taíno Guatú Má Cú A Borikén (excerpt shown here). 🪘✨ Today we celebrate the first people of Borikén and the descendants who carry their legacy forward. What Taíno-derived names and symbols have you spotted around the neighborhood? Share your finds in the comments! 👇 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #BarrioBoriken #TainoLegacy
