A week in, and am looking at the plus and minus of ensV2 vs V1. Interesting. Thoughts? Share yours 🫵 #ens #ensv2

When something no longer wants to give anymore, the best thing to do is give it a revamped name and increase prices, because that stimulates demand….. Said…no one

sadly this shows how low the demand for .eth names has gone. Breaks every "rule of thumb" for listing and selling and NO ONE wants this type of name. Just look at the buying wallet. We are still so damn early, but this kind of sale is just taking the pi$$ out of this sad state we are in.

Your options today are a 42 character hex string, or a name with a dot. That's the entire choice. One is unreadable. The other costs rent, expires when you forget, and still can't tell anyone which chain it points at. Those aren't two options. That's one problem with a subscription. What would the third option need to do for you to switch? 3️⃣❓

Is .eth really where Web3 identity lives? Everyone in Web3 has a .eth name. Almost nobody asks whether it is doing the work right now, or just sitting there looking official. And now ENSv2 is arriving, which makes the question urgent rather than academic. Migration is optional. New registrations move to v2 only. Costs change with it: $8 a year for a standard name, multi-year terms discounted, paid in stablecoins instead of ETH. The pitch is that your .eth name is your identity. Register it, set your records, and now you are somebody on-chain. It is a comforting story. Here is why it mostly does not hold. Identity is a claim other people accept. It is recognition, not configuration. A protocol can hand you an identifier. It cannot make anyone care. Your name resolves whether or not a single app chooses to read it, and most do not. The sign-in promise never arrived. The strong version of this argument was Sign-In With Ethereum: log in anywhere with your wallet and your name. The standard shipped in 2021. It did not win. Not for technical reasons. Sign-in was already solved, and "your users need a wallet and a signature" is a hard sell to a normal product team. When the DAO funded an identity server, it built it around OpenID Connect. The old-world standard the movement was meant to replace. Pragmatic, and telling. Nothing stops a platform ignoring you. A .eth name is stable as a token. It is not stable as a display name. Any app can show whatever it likes in place of your address, verify you with its own system, and never resolve your records. The threat is not seizure. It is indifference. You cannot be deplatformed somewhere that never adopted you. It is a subscription, not a possession. Five dollars a year today. Eight under ENSv2 for new registrations, unless you commit for years, though existing names can stay put on v1. Either way it renews until you stop, and an identity that lapses on a missed payment is a lease with good marketing. So the moment to decide what your name is actually for is now, before the migration makes the choice for you by making it optional and leaving it undone. Take all of that seriously and the honest question is what survives. One thing does. Your .eth name resolves to addresses across chains. It holds records that point to your assets, your contracts, your endpoints. You control it with the same key that controls your money, verified by the same machinery, with no company deciding whether you still qualify. That is not a profile. That is a control plane. And it is why the identity framing has always been slightly off. Humans do not need this. Agents do. An autonomous system that holds assets, transacts, and exposes services has to be findable, and the thing looking for it is not a person reading a bio. It is another machine resolving an identity to reach an endpoint. That problem is already being solved in ENS. There are record standards written for exactly this: how an agent declares its context, its endpoints, and which registry it belongs to. One name. One identity. Discoverable by anything that can resolve it. That is where naming stops being optional. Not because people want a handle that works. Because machines need somewhere to look. So, is .eth the place for Web3 identity? No, if identity means being recognised by other people. Platforms do that, and no protocol is taking it from them. Yes, if identity means a durable, self-controlled identifier that resolves to what you own and verifies without a gatekeeper. Smaller claim. Also one with no real competitor. .eth is not the identity layer of Web3. It is the naming layer that becomes necessary wherever something on-chain has to be its own agent. The name comes first, because you cannot reach what you cannot name. Good enough reason to own one. Just not the reason most people get sold. I work in this ecosystem. That is exactly why I would rather argue it honestly than repeat the pitch
