My initial S-1 thoughts:
As I expected, Anthropic is still firmly unprofitable. But, to their credit, they've significantly reduced compute costs as a % of revenue, leading to much narrower losses. On first look, there is a plausible and imminent path to profitability. This is impressive.
However, the meat of the document begins at page 161, under "liquidity and capital resources." There, we learn where the true compute costs have been hiding: future compute purchase agreements.
As of June 30, Anthropic has signed roughly $587 billion in compute leases and minimum purchase commitments that haven't begun. It has since signed $245 billion more, resulting in more than $800B in future compute costs. None of these costs have made their way onto the income statement yet. But they will, and when they do, the profitability picture will look completely different.
Anthropic acknowledges how precarious these agreements are. They point out that their compute providers (on whom they also rely for financial support) also sell services that "compete with ours." As a result, these providers/competitors may eventually force them into onerous agreements. This is something I've expressed concerns about for a while, and it's nice to see Anthropic openly recognize it.
That's why Anthropic admitted their most significant strategic decision: They're about to initiate "substantial capital expenditures." So far, they've spent zero. Why the change? Because they know they can no longer rely on leasing compute, "the magnitude and timing" of which are "inherently uncertain." So, they're going to build their own compute, which will, in their words, "change the cash flow profile of our business." I.e. make it severely negative.
It's possible that this is why they want to go public now. Since these costs have not yet "come online," they can be left as footnotes at the bottom of the document. But very soon, that won't be possible.
In sum, Anthropic's income statement is not telling you the full picture. To the company's credit, they spared us the accounting gymnastics of stripping out training costs in their non-GAAP adjustments. That would have been offensive. Still, the most important numbers aren't getting the requisite attention.
I encourage you to start at page 161 for a more complete understanding of what's going on.
Decent of King Tango to be making campaign ads for the Democrats this close to the midterms.

I’ll take a shot at answering one of these good questions. These poor young people are not dying for "no reason". They’re dying because Vladimir Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine and Ukrainians don’t want to be murdered. I hope this helps.
How dare viewers sit on the sofa watching BBC1 when the new Director General insists no-one watches television any more (there may be a little something about this in the current Eye)
Big boost to Graham Norton chat show from Prince William appearance, 2.6m viewers, double average since 34th series started, rounding off a great Friday for BBC1 - Celeb Traitors 9.5m, regional news 3.6m etc - a 35% all day share. Ratings data @Digital_i_

I've been in those trenches every month or two for the last four years.
People are tired, they miss their families, they have their frustrations.
But they are there, still holding the line, with full clarity that if they let go, Russia and its tyranny will come to their homes.
This is also excellent 👇👇👇

I've posted a new edition of Whose Beeb?, my blog on the future of the BBC
It analyses the financial realities behind the BBC's recent brutal cuts, the Government's obscenely stupid proposals for a 'YouTube tax', and why it's all George Osborne's fault: whosebeeb.substack.com/p/rec…
The two comedy stand up documentaries on Netflix : 'Who is Martin Mull' & 'The Maria Bamford story' are just superb. Both far more moving than I expected them to be.
You spelt Russia wrong.
The billionaires on the side of the murderous dictator are great at spotting 'elites'.
At some stage does America say - "This is not who we are, we are not pure evil???"
Or has Musk's billions & Trump & AI melted enough brains that it no longer cares.
Trump: Amy Acton's mother said horrible things about Amy Acton and I don't know why you're not allowed to broadcast it. That one ad should really win.
Q: What about what the daughter said about the mother?
Trump: I don’t know what she said.
Q: That the mother remained with the stepfather who sexually abused her.
Trump: When did she make that statement? Recently?
Q: Years ago.
Trump: I have no idea. All I know is, Amy Acton's mother said horrible things about Amy Acton. She’s fair game.
Aside from the shocking substance of this story, what's amazing is how it was unearthed by Cole. The short version: The Russians were able to penetrate Jared Kushner's iPhone and extract screenshots and data. Then, a Russian intel official was captured by Dutch intelligence (!) and flipped. The Dutch believed Kushner may have been acting on behalf of Russia, so pursued him as an intel target and were able to get into his phone.
They did not find any evidence of Russian collusion, instead they watched him moving hundreds of millions of dollars from slush funds created by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, one of them housed in Israel's central bank.
Incredible reporting, and if Democrats have any sense, they will pull on these threads and learn a lot more about this money.
Explosive story many years in the making, now out in Vanity Fair by Matthew Cole (who will be on Breaking Points next week, and publishing soon in @DropSiteNews):
Saudi Arabia and the UAE set up multi-billion slush funds for Jared Kushner to use.
Iran-Contra 2 here (except with Iran-Contra, at least the US got some hostages released. Not clear what we got out of this one.)
