There are some moments as a parent that you know you’ll never forget. This is going to be one of them. 💜🏈
Epilepsy has kept him from a lot of things but since the beginning of the school year, Bryson has been helping with his high school freshman football team as their manager. But he’s never just standing on the sidelines. His coaches have embraced him—letting him help run drills and warm-ups, get the guys fired up, and truly be part of the team.
Last week, the head coach called me with a question I never expected to hear.
He asked how I would feel about letting Bryson SUIT UP for the Homecoming game and be the kicker for the opening kickoff. They would have a plan to safely escort him off the field afterward so there would be no chance of him being tackled.
Through my tears, I said, “Absolutely YES.”
There were still hoops to jump through—approvals to get and even a conversation with the opposing coach.
Then Tuesday, Bryson got the news:
IT’S A GO. 💜
He gets to put on the full uniform. The pads. The helmet. Everything.
And when that ball is placed on the tee, Bryson gets to be the kicker.
I don’t know if there are words for what this means to him—or to us.
Bryson has spent so much of his life on the sidelines cheering for everyone else. He’s helped coach his siblings and his dad’s college players. He has encouraged and celebrated so many athletes while watching them play the game he loves.
But this time, he gets his turn.
For one incredible moment, he gets to walk onto that football field in full gear as part of his team.
He gets to line up.
He gets to kick that football.
And for those few seconds, he won’t be watching someone else live the moment.
It will be HIS moment. 💜🏈
Thank you to a coaching staff that sees Bryson, values him, and was willing to go above and beyond to give him an experience he will remember for the rest of his life.
Homecoming will mean something completely different to us this year.

More than half a million balsa trees are illegally logged in the Amazon each year, largely driven by the demand for wind turbine blades.
As plantation supply runs short, logging has moved into protected rainforest and indigenous territories.
Roads are cut into intact jungle, habitats are fragmented, and local ecosystems are disrupted.
Balsa is lightweight and essential for turbine construction. Demand has surged due to the West's environmental push, but the supply chain is largely untracked at source.
The result is an ignored cost: so-called "green" energy, cut down and shipped.

Just after midnight Thursday, police say a Black man, Elijah Hemingway, got into his home in Edgewood and attacked him and his wife while they were asleep in their bed.
His wife told police they fought back with everything they had.
Their two children, 8 and 12 years old, made it out alive.

A police dog tracked down 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway hiding behind a nearby house with cuts on his hand.

Back in February, according to a criminal complaint, Hemingway forced his way into his ex-partner's home and stole her laptop and two cell phones.
He was arrested in July. Two felonies. Burglary and theft.

When we look at solar farms or wind turbines soaring into the blue, we're meant to see the historic birth of clean, emission-free energy.
This was the rock-solid renewables vow: virtually free energy from wind and sunlight. But the reality now looks and feels vastly more sobering. Pull back that curtain and you find one of the largest, most mineral-intensive mining expansions in human history.
The energy transition isn't just a shift in technology—it's a colossal leap for mankind in what we mine, extract, crush and refine from the Earth.
Data from the International Energy Agency reveals the stark physical realities: a single onshore wind plant requires nine times more mineral resources than an equivalent gas-fired power plant. An electric vehicle demands six times the mineral inputs of a conventional petrol car.
An EV is almost twice the weight, and most of that extra baggage is a huge lithium battery.
Industrial demand has tilted drastically from pay-as-you-go consumer electronics to global-scale infrastructure. In a recent five-year window alone, world lithium demand tripled, cobalt surged by 70%, and nickel jumped by 40%.
The sheer volume and variety of raw materials required is staggering. Solar panels consume massive quantities of copper, aluminium, silicon and silver. The solar industry consumes over 20% of the world's entire annual silver mine production.
Wind turbines require thousands of tonnes of steel, copper, zinc and manganese, alongside heavy rare earths like neodymium and dysprosium for high-strength generator magnets. Grid storage and EVs rely on unprecedented volumes of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. Shocked yet?
This leads to a crucial, unaddressed paradox: we have reached material entropy. The world is extracting finite metals from concentrated, high-grade ore bodies, refining them at immense energy and environmental expense, and then dispersing them in microscopic layers across billions of weather-exposed assets.
Once deployed, recycling these valuable materials becomes an economic and physical nightmare. Stripping a 'sliver of silver' from a decommissioned solar panel currently costs significantly more than the silver itself is worth.
Without a fundamental breakthrough in design and recycling physics, yesterday’s green solutions will inevitably become tomorrow’s toxic, unprocessable mountain of industrial waste.
While lifecycle analyses show renewables generate fewer operational carbon emissions than fossil fuels, the 'green' label cannot ignore the dirt under its fingernails.
For any energy system to be genuinely sustainable, the next frontier isn't just about capturing wind and sunlight—it's making sure these buried geological treasures aren't lost forever.

A staggering 8-9 billion solar panels have been deployed globally—yet up to 90% are on a direct trajectory to recycling or landfill.
While modern solar panels are technically made of roughly 95% recyclable materials (glass, aluminum, copper, and silicon), recycling currently runs at a steep economic loss.
The cost: Processing runs $500–$1,000 per tonne ($10 to $40 per panel).
The yield: Recovered material values fail to cover basic transport fees.
Compared with minimal landfill fees, market economics dictate landfill as the default. We are already seeing a preview of this crisis in the wind sector, where an expected 43 million tonnes of turbine blade waste by 2050 has led several European nations—including Austria, Germany, Finland, and the Netherlands—to ban decommissioned blades from landfills.
Solar is hitting the exact same brick wall. Early installations are reaching the end of their 20-to-25-year lifespans, while tens of millions more are being prematurely retired due to efficiency upgrades or repowering incentives.
This has triggered a severe regulatory Catch-22. To prevent heavy metals like lead and cadmium from leaching into soil and water, jurisdictions like Victoria in Australia have banned solar panels from landfills as hazardous e-waste.
Yet, commercial recycling has become one more bottleneck in one long story of failure. International energy bodies try to argue that leaching risks from intact or managed panels are within standard safety thresholds. But the sheer volume of impending e-scrap presents a scary reality. The 'clean energy' transition has become a multi-generational hazardous waste nightmare.
If recycling is cost-prohibitive and landfill is illegal, where are those billions of panels meant to go?

Where I live in Brussels, anarchy is already here. Listen to this utter madness: there's an open air drug market in front of my kids' school. All-day open drug dealing, occasional raids, shootings, bullets through the school windows, bombs through letterboxes of the drug families on the adjacent streets, bundles of cash and bags of drugs hidden under cars, was of cash sometimes blowing in the wind, stuck in climbing plants.. there's a drive-through service, a lookout system with code words shouted all over the square when the cops are coming, intimidation, drugs hidden in kids slide, young boys on scooters whizzing around dropping off new supplies and taking away big bags of cash... you're not able to even use your phone when you walk past or you risk having it yanked out of your hand (there are boys watching for filmers)... almost all of the most risky jobs are done by asylum seekers with no papers picked up from the local train station, they're let go straight away after being arrested etc. This has been going on for years and it's getting worse but nobody can sell their houses and escape. Any effort to do something about it is thwarted by leftie saviours who want to hug-the-violence-out (many of whom don't even live here). If you attribute agency to any of the people involved, you're a fascist. If you voice any support for the authorities efforts to fix the problem, you're a fascist. So we all just have to put up with it and hope none of us gets killed.
Anyway, in the neighbourhood chat group recently there's a message about a nice little activity that will help -- temporarily -- "occupy" the square (it's all we can do). The idea is that next week, on a certain day, from 7pm-10pm we'll all pull a chair and/or table outside and have a drink or dinner in front of the houses on the square, so that the flow of drug traffic will be disrupted a bit (customers don't like being watched when they buy drugs in front of a primary school, it makes them feel bad). A little spot of very civil and convivial disobedience.
The first response to the message was "I don't like this surveillance of people", it's a type of "social control", and it's "accusatory".
Nobody responds. Next message is someone from the municpality "eeeeh guys if you're going to put chairs out on the sidewalk you need to inform the authorities and the emergency services, they need to know"
It's a literal open-air drug market. The drug dealers have their own chairs from which they sell drugs (it's very tiring). I'm pretty sure they don't have permission from the authorities for either of those activities.
Most importantly, though, the message is clear: if you participate in this "accusatory surveillance-based social control", you're a fascist. So it's unlikely anyone will do it.

That, coupled with students (and parents) increasingly reliant on AI, deeply concerns me.

This year, I have had multiple cases of parents trying to re-write essays for students OR paying thousands for advice… only to do the opposite.
The parent/student dynamic, and parental paranoia regarding college processes, is absurd compared to 8 years ago.

A major Finnish study published this spring in the Acta Paediatrica, using data from Finland’s mental health services through their education system, tracked young people diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria over a 24-year period.
The study found that “trans” kids often have other underlying mental health issues aside from Gender Dysphoria.
More importantly, the study found that those young people who “transitioned” and received medical treatment, including hormones & surgeries, were MORE likely to have mental health issues after treatment.
Sure… when a 19-year-old kid suddenly realizes that he or she will never be able to conceive children or enjoy normal sexual pleasure for the rest of their lives, that can screw with your head.

McDonald's is spending 8.5 billion dollars to find out why families stopped coming.

They took out the playground.
The plan, announced Wednesday at investor day. Better food, faster service, new equipment, AI tools, hospitality training, and a bigger push into chicken and beverages. They call it Next. The goal, they say, is making customers feel more comfortable.
Wall Street loved it so much the stock fell 5 percent to its lowest since 2022.
Over five years McDonald's shares are down 3 percent. Burger King's parent is up 14. The owner of Taco Bell and KFC is up 13.
This is not a hamburger problem. This is a McDonald's problem.
So let us talk about who used to eat there.
Parents. That was the whole business. Parents at 5:40 on a Tuesday with three kids in the back and nothing thawed at home.
You did not go for the burger. You went because your kids could run screaming through a plastic tube for 40 minutes while you sat with a coffee and experienced silence.
That was the product. The food was the cover charge.
The first PlayPlace opened in 1971 in Birmingham, Alabama, and for fifty years it did one job. It made small children demand to go to McDonald's.
Then 2020 arrived, every play area in the country closed, and a great many never came back. The equipment came out during a remodeling program named Experience of the Future.
The Experience of the Future turned out to be a touchscreen.
Their own chief executive said he did not know if ball pits were in their future.
Sir, you were not selling ball pits. You were selling forty minutes.
So now there is no counter, no playground, and no reason for a seven year old to want to go. A screen, a window, and a bag.
And for that we pay prices that require a moment of reflection in the parking lot.
For thin, overcooked, oddly uniform pucks that taste like a memory of beef.
I did not love them because they were good. I loved them because I was eight and there was a slide.
And have you seen the new buildings.
The old ones were unmistakable. Red roof, yellow arches, legible from a highway at 70 to a child who could not yet read.
The new ones are a flat gray box with a small logo and a drive through wrapped around it. A regional claims office with a fryer.
They removed the color, the characters, the counter, and the playground, and then hired consultants to find out why it no longer feels like anywhere.
Which is why, when I have to eat fast food, I go to Chick-fil-A.
Not for the politics. For the competence.
They have led the customer satisfaction index for fast food eleven years running, and average 8.5 million dollars per location against McDonald's 4 million.
More than double, while closed on Sundays. Fifty two days a year with the lights off, and still double.
A seventeen year old hands you a bag and says my pleasure and means it about 70 percent, which is 70 percent more than a touchscreen has managed.
McDonald's is spending 8.5 billion on hospitality training.
Chick-fil-A earns 8.5 million per restaurant by just having some.
So here is my consulting proposal, free of charge, on behalf of mothers everywhere.
Put the playgrounds back.
Not a nostalgia campaign. Not a retro cup. The structure. Tubes, slides, a door the kids cannot open from the inside, and a bench where a tired woman can sit.
And understand what you are buying, because it is not lunch.
A six year old does not know your food is bad. He has no basis for comparison and no functioning palate. He thinks the burger is incredible because he is standing in a castle made of tubes.
That is the window. That is the only window you get.
You catch them before the taste buds arrive, and thirty years later they drive past your sign, feel something they cannot explain, and pull in anyway.
That is not a menu strategy. That is imprinting, and you shut it down in 2020 to save on cleaning.
Eight and a half billion dollars for AI tools and hospitality training.
Or a slide.

An officer warned him he'd get a WARRANT if he didn't show up, he'll have to miss school for it.
His name is Cade, he's 11 years old, a sixth grader in Oviedo, Florida.
His dad helped him start a little summer business selling squirrel tables and Cade worked all summer long, he saved up $900 and he bought that bike himself.
An 11-year-old entrepreneur, in 2026.

On Labor Day, Cade grabbed his fishing pole and rode toward the pond at Sweetwater Park, he was on the shoulder of the road, about 300 FEET from his house.
Why not the sidewalk?
His answer: "If I go on the sidewalk, I can only go 10mph, and also it's going to scare the pedestrians."

Then, an Oviedo police officer pulled him over.
Asked him for his license, his registration, his proof of insurance.

Then they called in the city tow truck!!!!!!
His dad's words: "They called in the city wrecker for this little, tiny electric bike and winched it on up there."
Next Tuesday, Cade has to skip school to stand in front of a judge.
Yes TECHNICALLY the police have a point under Florida law, but where was the common sense?!!!!
Cade now says: "Now I'm kind of scared to ride my dirt bike."
A Virginia mom got a criminal record for letting her son walk to a pond, two little girls in Pennsylvania got hauled into court over a broken swing, and now an 11-year-old in Florida gets printed for riding to go fishing.
We are criminalizing childhood in this country.
Even THE TOWN MAYOR called Cade a "good kid." She's right.
