In 2013, Nasir El-Rufai, then APC chieftain, traveled to Anambra State to monitor the governorship election. He was restricted in his hotel by DSS operatives, untill after the result was announced. He sued the DSS and He publicly held then Governor Peter Obi responsible. Obi denied it. The dispute lasted for years.
In October 17, 2022, Peter Obi came to Kaduna for the Arewa Joint Committee Presidential Interaction. El-Rufai was the then state governor, after the police, he had the DSS, he could have done what Peter Obi did to him. He confronted Obi face-to-face around. Obi replied face to face that it was for a security purpose.
In 2023, Obi returned with Datti Baba-Ahmed for his Labour Party presidential rally at Ahmadu Bello Stadium. Full access. Full mobilization. He met students, academics and traditional rulers and El-Rufai did not interfere.
That is democracy in action.
El-Rufai had state power in his hands in 2022 and 2023. He could have done to Obi what he did to him in 2013. He did not.
A vindictive man restricts opponents. A democrat guarantees their freedom even after a personal grievance.
That is El-Rufai. The democrat.
