I joined @BBCWorld last night to talk about the EU’s long-anticipated $1bn pair of fines against Google and how the decisions may impact transatlantic relations.
Fun piece on Europe’s recent and rapid embrace of Halloween. Pumpkin production has tripled (!) since the mid-2010s alone.

Quebec’s separatist premier has said he will boycott the EU-Canada summit that opens in Montreal today, warning European leaders that deals struck there without his government’s consent may not be applied in the country’s second-biggest province.

⚜️ Quebec new separatist premier says he is boycotting the EU-Canada summit in Montreal and warns in a letter to EU leaders that any deal that goes against Quebec’s interests “will simply not be implemented.”

Ask EU leaders what they think of Mark Carney’s climate credentials, and you’ll get a gushing response.
But this rosy view sidesteps a less comfortable reality: Canada is a major fossil fuel producer whose climate ambitions fall far short of Europe’s.

Quebec’s new separatist government accused Ottawa today of barring the province from this week’s EU-Canada summit in Montreal and warned it would have the last word on any deals struck there that concern its powers. vist.ly/5q9ny

Quebec’s new separatist government is treating this week’s EU-Canada summit in Montreal as the start of a wider diplomatic push to get the province in the room whenever Ottawa and Brussels strike deals that concern its powers.

🇧🇷Brazil runoff on @Kalshi, in one chart.
Bolsonaro traded at 80%+ for two days. In the space of about an hour this afternoon, Lula went from 20% to 70% and Bolsonaro collapsed to 31%, on the heaviest volume of the market's life.
The bottom panel tells the story: low volumes all weekend, then everything at once as results came in.

Lula's win last night is also a win for Pedro Sánchez's global project. Sánchez moved his Global Progressive Mobilisation, a meeting of the world's left-wing forces, from November to April at Lula's request to give him a platform before the vote.

When the cost of eggs spiked in 2022, economists said bird flu alone was to blame. Anyone who suspected corporate price-fixing was dismissed as a crank.
Inside the alleged egg cartel the experts said couldn’t exist.
