These crabs were seemingly, but not actually, facing off over a cluster of sculpin eggs (or engaging in a dance battle).

A beautiful and large (3” length) specimen of a Brachioteuthis glass squid, shot right here in Bali. 2 individuals over my last 2 nights out is special for such a rare species!
Shot using scuba, offshore from NE Bali, out over the abyss, drifting with the plankton, at night.

Mobile fauna, eg holothurians or snails, maintain nodules exposed on the abyssal seabed surface for other species, eg corals or sponges, to colonise. By disturbing these species, #DeepSeaMining threatens the integrity of abyssal nodule field habitats See: cell.com/current-biology/ful…

Sometimes the best home is . . . another animal!
Corals and taller animals extend into the water column where the food is & make great lodging. A tiny crustacean that lives in the upper branches of a coral has access to a steady stream of nutritious marine snow. #SamplingGap

Greetings from the abyss! During the #Okeanos 2026 Cook Islands ROV Exploration cruise, we captured beautiful video of this cusk eel. Interestingly, despite their long bodies and eel-like shape, cusk eels are not "true" eels.

In the midwater, between about 200 & 1000m, hunting comes naturally for animals that live in these dark waters. This comb jelly possesses long filaments w/ sticky cells called colloblasts, allowing them to ensnare unsuspecting snacks. #SamplingGap, 275 m
