My kindergartener’s “remote school” is a 10 min Google Meet and a packet that we are supposed to complete throughout the day. This counts toward the mandatory 180 days of instruction. This farce is a burden on families. Either remove Election Day as a day off if you need the day for instruction, or give the kids the day off and don’t pretend making my kid trace letters is equivalent to a day of school.

@nycschools students will learn remotely on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Prepare by making sure your child has a working, internet-enabled device. Access their NYCPS Student Account: on.nyc.gov/4jGN5mb. For help, visit SelfService.schools.nyc or connect with your school.

google says if you dont want AI in the classroom you wont get search either earnest Q: highlighted quote seems carefully crafted to suggest there is a technical reason google could not turn off AI in search. is there *any* truth to that? nytimes.com/2026/11/03/us/go…

Berkeley is supposed to be a place where brilliant students thrive, not where professors are forced to compensate for years of missing math education. Is lowering admissions standards helping students? The clear answer is NO. Read the full story: iwfeatures.com/profile/this-…

Not just his school. Almost every school has it. The answers to the questions are online. The courses aren’t proctored. Last year I watched a senior get 21 credits in 1 semester to graduate with her class. When a school says they have a 99% graduation rate, this is how they get it.

In a devastating 1rst-person piece, NYC education advocate and mom Adriana Aviles tells how her son received the highest grades in math throughout elementary and middle school in Queens’ District 26, the best in the city. Yet now in high school, she soon discovered, “He couldn’t solve basic algebra. He couldn’t do geometry. He couldn’t compute elementary-school fractions." “My shock soon gave way to heartbreak, then anger. The NYC education system had betrayed my son to make itself look better." “I failed too. I didn’t scrutinize his work closely or check his performance on state test scores because I figured if his report cards were good then everything was fine.” “I looked back and discovered he was deemed ‘not proficient’ in math on a 7th-grade state exam.” nypost.com/2026/10/31/us-new…

This is all too common and not only NY schools. 9 in 10 parents think their child is doing at or above average and use report card grades for feedback. Standardized test scores tell a different story. gallup.com/analytics/513881/…

To put it in perspective, New York City has lost more students than Houston has in its public schools. The 187,000 kids NYC has lost would make it one of the ten largest school districts in the U.S.
Today my office has released a major new report on student enrollment in NYC. We found that k-12 enrollment in our public schools has fallen by 187k since 2013, with a projected decline of an additional 128k students by 2034. As total enrollment declines, NYCPS is serving a student population with growing needs. The number of students with disabilities is increasing. In the most recent school year, approximately 73% of students were in poverty and 14% were homeless or living in temporary housing. Our report finds the drop in enrollment is driven by declining births and families with children leaving NYC, with a particularly notable drop in public-school enrollment as students transition from elementary to middle school. These trends have massive implications for our schools that we have only barely begin to grapple with. My hope is that this report will spur a long overdue conversation about what the era of falling student enrollment means for NYC, and what we can do to reverse or slow it. 🧵

Earlier this evening, I testified before the The Montgomery County Board of Education about regional school capacity, deteriorating buildings, and Wootton High School’s permanent future on Wootton Parkway. My testimony focused on three main issues: 1. MCPS’s own data reinforce concerns I raised before the March Wootton decision: Our Central Region high schools are projected to grow by 3% in just 4 years and MCPS's own Central Region Summary shows a 101% capacity by 2030-31. Richard Montgomery already relies on 9 portable classrooms! 2. School conditions deserve serious attention. Of the five worst-conditioned elementary schools and five worst-conditioned secondary schools, 70% are in or serve the greater Rockville-Gaithersburg area. Our area also accounts for 54% of the 26 worst-conditioned schools overall. MCPS should establish a transparent, funded investment plan prioritizing the most deteriorating schools. 3. Our region needs a permanent Wootton High School on Wootton Parkway, operating separately from Crown and Churchill. With Central Region high schools projected to be virtually full or over capacity, we should be preserving the capacity our communities will need, not permanently giving it up. I am calling for a funded plan to rebuild or comprehensively renovate Wootton at its Rockville campus. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting today to testify and show support! Plan for the growth. Fund the repairs. And rebuild Wootton on Wootton Parkway. @fox5dc DC Coverage: fox5dc.com/news/montgomery-c… @ModeratelyMoco Publication of Full Testimony: moderatelymoco.com/van-grack… – at Rockville, MD

this is interesting: South Carolina passed a law in May banning minimum grades in K12 schools, to try and crack down on grade inflation..."among the first states to attempt to tackle the problem through legislation, following a similar law passed by Texas in 2009."

📚In 2024, Maryland set academic goals for students to reach by 2026 — by 2025 the goals had been lowered. Even with the revised benchmarks, students fell short in both English and math. 📉Now, some lawmakers say more accountability is needed as the state puts billions more into education funding.

Fantastic to see - this is mentioned as a pilot through mid-January and it looks like upcoming tutoring sessions are filled. I hope they monitor uptake AND outcomes and share with the community. Best wishes to the students and tutors!

First, they lowered cut scores. Then, they killed Regents exams. Now, New York is literally blocking AP test data. The war on objective benchmarks is complete.
