Yesterday’s videos showing Lena Kostyleva performing jumps at a rink in Voronezh made it clear that the situation is extremely tense. It’s hard to ignore the contrast: a two-time Russian National Championships winner is training in Voronezh under her mother’s supervision rather than at the academy with her coaching team. To say the least, this looks unusual - and it’s no surprise that fans have so many questions. Here’s what our source told us: - After videos emerged of training sessions in Reutov, where Lena was taking heavy falls while attempting ultra-C elements with unknown coaches, Anton Sikharulidze visited the Academy. Together with Evgeni Plushenko, he handed Irina Kostyleva her record book and wished her “all the best.” The situation surrounding Lena Kostyleva has taken an unexpected turn: she was effectively asked to leave Plushenko’s Academy - and it all stems from a conflict with her mother. This is particularly painful given how much effort Evgeni Plushenko has invested in Lena and how genuinely he has supported her. It seemed he had enough patience to endure anything, but even Olympic-level patience eventually runs out. The reason is not only Irina Kostyleva’s contradictory statements - for example, claiming Lena was receiving treatment in Voronezh while she was actually training in Reutov - but also a collective complaint. Eleven parents reportedly sent a letter to the federation, addressed to Sikharulidze and the ethics committee, concerning her behaviour at the Academy. There have been repeated complaints about Irina allegedly using obscene language, getting into arguments with other parents, and, particularly strangely, monitoring what happens on other skaters’ ice sessions. On several occasions, security reportedly escorted her out of other groups’ training sessions following confrontations. The skaters allegedly targeted by her harassment include Kalugina, Bazilyuk, Sarnovskaya, and, most recently, Lyubov Rubtsova. Irina reportedly calls these girls “scum” and “bitches,” claiming they prevent Lena from training properly. Parents complain that she demands certain children be removed from groups and publicly calls adult skaters “pensioners.” As a result, almost nobody at the Academy speaks to Lena anymore, even though they feel sorry for the girl. According to sources, there was only one condition under which they could remain at the Academy: Irina would have to stop attending training sessions. Lena is reportedly the only skater at the Academy who practises ultra-C jumps without protective shorts, and her mother knows this perfectly well. Nevertheless, whenever Lena falls and something displeases her, Irina allegedly rushes onto the ice and threatens the coaches. Lena is the Academy’s biggest star. Enormous resources are invested in her, but her mother apparently still feels that it isn’t enough. Even when Irina doesn’t show up at the rink, she reportedly continues to impose conditions and pressure the management. Nobody has spoken to her for a long time because of behaviour that is difficult to describe as normal. Lena even has a personal manager whose specific job includes communicating with Irina Kostyleva. Just think about that: a personal manager, a private changing room, and so on. Yet Irina still wants more! The manager allegedly has to spend three to four hours every day listening to threats, swearing, accusations, and blackmail, as well as dealing with what the source describes as constant lies and harassment of other skaters.
