It takes an inordinate amount of wit and charm to best Conan O’Brien in a riff-off. The most an average comedian or host can hope for is not to embarrass themselves trying, which is largely how Kareem Rahma fared in a recent episode of his popular social-media series, Subway Takes. But toward the end of the interview, Rahma and O’Brien were shown up by a stranger named Debbie Shields who just so happened to be commuting on their train.
The 68-year old native New Yorker didn’t know what ‘SubwayTakes’ was, or that she was about to get pulled into a viral improvisational comedy bit. But thanks to a childhood spent performing in church and experience hosting comedy and karaoke nights, she says her instincts kicked in immediately.
This 'SubwayTakes' appearance isn’t even the first time she has been put on the spot by someone with a huge comedy platform.
Shields shares which comedian once pulled her onstage at Barclays Center, how she’s handling her virality, and whether she’d be interested in hosting a show of her own: nymag.visitlink.me/Tr0FRD

America’s longest-running paternity dispute has seemingly come to an end: Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings, his enslaved chambermaid, and the Smithsonian has the DNA to prove it. Richard Kurin, a 50-year veteran of the institution, launched a top-secret study of the question in 2011. Now Jefferson’s entire genome has been sequenced, and compared with those of Hemings’s descendants. A set of newly confirmed Jefferson-Hemings descendants includes Margot Kossmann Williams, a biologist at Ohio State University, and her maternal grandmother, Dorothy McKnight. Julian Lucas talks to Williams and her mother, visiting pivotal sites in the lives of their ancestors. newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

Last week, Anthropic made an unexpected announcement: all text created using Claude, the company’s large language model, would now contain an invisible watermark. If a person were to copy and paste a chatbot-crafted passage into a separate document, an A.I. detector would be able to determine the likelihood that it had been generated by Claude. The company claimed that it made the change to comply with “transparency obligations” outlined in a new A.I. act from the European Union. But can a cryptographical signal really make our writing landscape more candid? Brady Brickner-Wood considers Anthropic’s motives, and the possible effects of this new measure—from more public shaming to increased A.I. surveillance. newyorker.com/culture/infini…
