Very pleased to see this work out that identifies a code in C3 rice co-opted to allow C4 photosynthesis. doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-0…
Thanks to all involved but in particular @l_luginbuehl @JoeEcker @_joseph_swift Great transatlantic partnership.

Joe Ecker @JoeEcker, Joseph Swift @_joseph_swift, and team have revealed the genetic details of 30-million-year-old question: How did some plants evolve from less-efficient C3 photosynthesis to C4 photosynthesis? Their findings pave the way for the creation of more robust, efficient plants that withstand the effects of climate change and can feed a growing global population 🌱 @Nature

Absolutely delighted to share that I have been awarded an #ERCStG! In maxSYMize, we will explore how plants regulate carbon allocation to beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, and whether we can optimize carbon delivery for enhanced symbiotic benefits. @plantsci @Cambridge_Uni

ALT Developing new ideas into knowledge UKRI Chief Executive, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, said: UKRI’s Future Leaders Fellowships provide researchers and innovators with long-term support and training to develop ambitious, transformative ideas. The programme supports the research and innovation leaders of the future to transcend disciplinary and sector boundaries, bridging the gap between academia and business. The fellows announced today demonstrate how these awards continue to drive excellence, and to shorten the distance from discovery to prosperity and public good.

Evolution's secret to C4 photosynthesis also includes translation! 🌱 Our work reveals how translational control of photosynthesis genes adapts to light in C3 rice and C4 sorghum. @CRAGENOMICA @jmhibber @TranslatingRNA @Thepallavisingh @TinaSchreier biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

How has gene expression changed in different leaf cells to allow partitioning of photosynthesis and the evolution of the C4 pathway? We find that C4 photosynthesis genes acquire ancestral cis-elements to re-direct gene expression to a new cell type.
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
C4 photosynthesis is highly complex but found in >60 plant lineages. One hallmark is cell specific gene expression. We show that’s mediated by C4 genes acquiring cis elements that link to cell identity networks

Leaves of C4 plants make massive numbers of plasmodesmata linking M and BS cells. But how? Here we show it’s because their formation is linked to induction of photosynthesis.
