In America, a hardware store called Harbor Freight.
I walked in to buy one roll of black electrical tape. Seventy-nine cents.
At the register, a bearded clerk named Frank scanned my tape, reached beneath the counter, and placed a massive red five-gallon plastic bucket between us.
"Free bucket weekend," he said.
I looked at the price tag on the bucket. Four dollars and ninety-nine cents.
I looked at my tape. Seventy-nine cents.
I stood before the register while basic arithmetic died in my hands.
"The vessel costs six times the tribute," I informed him. "If you do this for every customer, your house will fall before winter."
"Been doing it for years, chief. Take the bucket."
In my land, when a lord grants you a vessel larger than your purchase, you are expected to fill it in his service.
I held the wire handle with both hands and asked Frank what a man does with such a bucket.
He looked at me the way a monk looks at an uninitiated boy.
"Everything," Frank said, "except carry water."
I thought he was speaking in riddles. He was speaking the literal law of the land.
I have now inspected four garages on my street, and I must report that the entire residential infrastructure of the United States rests upon five-gallon plastic buckets.
Nobody puts water in them.
The first bucket holds rusty bolts from machines that died during the Bush administration.
The second bucket is inverted so a man can sit on it while staring at a lawnmower he has no intention of fixing today.
The third bucket is an emergency step-stool so a father can stand fourteen inches closer to a smoke detector that will not stop chirping.
I carried my red bucket home and set it beside my garage door.
On Saturday morning, my seventy-four-year-old neighbor Walt walked past my driveway with his coffee.
He stopped. He looked at the red bucket. Then he looked at me.
Without a word, Walt walked back to his own garage, returned sixty seconds later, and dropped a brand-new yellow sponge and a brass hose nozzle into my bucket.
"Saw you finally got your bucket," Walt said, tapping the plastic rim twice. "Welcome to the street, kid."
I spent seventy-nine cents on tape.
They gave me a throne, a toolbox, and citizenship on my block.

Fwiw - trade shows cost approximately 30-40% more post-COVID vs pre-COVID.
And for a show that was more downfunnel marketing than direct revenue generation, that radically changes the calculus.
"Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024

While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years."

Okay I wave my magic wand and every single person on the street is now 100% sober.
They still can't afford a first and last month deposit, they don't have a 700 credit score, have an eviction on their record, and can't afford a 10% rent increase every year.
Now what?
Oh cool! The last big thing I worked on before I left is up.
It's a system where you can set triggered effects for IRL games via donations.
Like forcing a NAT20 in D&D, or a countering a card in a game of Magic, or a reverse a billion in Uno.
Glad to see it is out in the wild!

Try pitching a VR game without guns and you'll know my pain. Someone actually said "what if you added guns" to my slice of life narrative adventure game.

Thank you for proving my point.

ALT Screenshot of my tweet that says: "There have been a lot of "hot takes" in regards to how game dev works and it's made me realize how much a part of the gaming community has zero empathy for others. We need to get better at that." And a reply to my tweet from a username LmaoKek that says: "No we don't have to empathizes with your job or your situation we just want good products for once we want you to do your job properly to make it worth while spending full price on a game. The crying about work is beyond the joke"

The woke agenda is ruining movies, I mean if they made Alien today they’d probably cast a woman as the lead and make one of the characters trans
Fun fact: ups and FedEx only directly service 20% of addresses in the USA. The rest are handed off to USPS who is obligated to service 100%

It's really easy to take principles like DRY overboard, but remember that premature overloading is almost always unnecessary. Don't build around features that aren't yet needed. They will likely change before they are implemented, and working around those assumptions gets hard.

The watershed on mandatory in-office work has come and gone.
If you're mandating people to work from an office, you're abdicating trust, flexibility, better teams, better work/life balance and doubling down on higher costs, lower productivity, and a more vulnerable workforce.

After Beast Wars, I binged #Transformers Beast Machines. It's honestly not bad, but it's not a great transformers show either. If it was any other IP, it'd be great.
Decided to binge watch #Transformers Beast Wars (1996), as I haven't seen it since it originally aired on TV. Honestly? It holds up well. It's chock full of scenes recreated from famous movies like Terminator and Rambo2, so it's a fun re-watch as an adult
