Writing well and keep improving your writing is a fantastic advice from @joanacasey to succeed in academia -- "If you can’t write well, people can’t learn from what you’ve done. They won’t cite you as often"
Finding time to write well & edit is key to the impact of our work👇
walked into the office as an associate professor today

I am relieved to say that I will no longer be assisting the professors.
Instead, I have been approved to associate with professors moving forward.
I owe many thanks to many people. Cheers all. 🫡

How do abortion restrictions impact birth rates?
Our analysis in @JAMA_current studied the impact of the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Act on counts of lives births. We find ~9800 births above expectation between Apr-Dec 2022 (3% increase) in Texas.

Our new paper shows how restrictive abortion policies can increase infant mortality. Some— but not all— of the increase we found was likely due to forced continuation of pregnancies with known lethal congenital anomalies.
Absolutely heartbreaking study to work on.
Breaking: Infant Deaths After Texas’ 2021 Ban on Abortion in Early Pregnancy | Women's Health | JAMA Pediatrics.
Hats off to the JHU team.
Our team has a similar study that we will now preprint that confirms this.
A crucial and horrific finding. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Great to see this paper finally out! Would not have been possible without the diligent longitudinal follow up of this cohort by an amazing team of collaborators.

🔥 How do we measure long-term exposure to wildfire pm25? 🔥
Unlike total pm25 that varies ~smoothly over time wildfire pm25 has short-term extreme levels
pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.23…
Our 2006–2020 EJ analysis detected over-representation of non-Hispanic
-American Indian and Alaska Native (1.68X, 95% CI: 1.01-2.81)
-white (1.13X, 95% CI: 0.99-1.32)
-multiracial (1.06X, 95% CI: 0.97-1.23) people
compared to their CA-wide representation
(see fancy figure 👇)
We did not see disproportionate study period-wide (2006-2020) exposure for communities identified as disadvantaged by CalEnviroScreen.
However, in some years, disadvantaged communities were more exposed.
