I have shipped a lot of software over the years. The longest-running project of my life is a book about a chess player who died in 1954. It has a publisher now: Hentrich & Hentrich, Leipzig, spring 2027.
1895: a 30-year-old plays in the great Hastings tournament. 1946: back in Hastings, 80 and a refugee, he wins the brilliancy prize. Every other player from 1895 is dead. He was my great-great-uncle. His biography: spring 2027, Hentrich & Hentrich. mieses.info/en/book-biograph…
The book is in German. Hentrich & Hentrich publish on Jewish culture and history, out of Leipzig, where Mieses was born, and Berlin. English rights stayed with me; an English edition is in preparation. The page above has a newsletter that sends one message on the day the book is out.

Jacques Mieses, 80, begins a six-game match against Gerald Abrahams, 38, a Liverpool barrister. Mieses wins 4½-1½.
At Bournemouth in 1939, Abrahams had won exactly one game. Against Mieses.

In July 1927 the German Chess Federation turned 50 and gave out twelve medals. Ninth on the list: "J. Mieses-Leipzig". He wasn't in the hall. He was in London, playing board two at the first official Olympiad.
He was my great-grandmother's brother.

A charity granted Jacques Mieses, 77, £21 for two pairs of orthopedic shoes. His last pair from Leipzig, built up for a right leg an inch and a half short since 1937, was past mending.
In #Leipzig, money had never been his worry.

Liverpool, April 1923. Nine rounds in a week. Mieses scored 8 out of 9 and finished undefeated, ahead of Maróczy.
He was fifty-eight.
Gunsberg ended his report in the Liverpool Daily Post with four words: "Hats off to Mieses."

The Hague, 1949. I was eighty-four. My opponent, Dirk van Foreest, was eighty-six.
I won in twenty moves, announced the result and added: "Die Jugend hat gesiegt." Youth has triumphed.

Following their Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program, South Park is making a big change. Creators Trey Parker & Matt Stone announce:
“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount -- a Skydance Capitulation.”

New episodes will be available to stream on Paramount+ around the world, with next-day availability in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Mieses edited it for the next fifty-one years, until 1952. It stayed in print until 2004, past thirty editions.
