Footballers who pretend to be more hurt than they are should be forced to visit an 8 year old child who's dressed up as a doctor on the side of the pitch, and only be allowed to come back on when said child is bored of using their toy stethoscope and bandages on them. #WorldCup – at Market Warsop, England

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

All at Huddersfield Town are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong supporter Sir Patrick Stewart. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this sad time. A titan of his craft and a legend and hero to millions worldwide, his legacy will live on. Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, Sir Patrick was a Terrier in every sense, and we’re proud to have counted him as one of our own. Once a Terrier, always a Terrier 💙 #htafc

Not only was Sir Patrick Stewart a deeply talented man and unending joy in his acting roles, he was beyond all things a mensch. He spoke out on domestic violence when most men are silent. His memory will certainly be for a blessing.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

I miss the days before social media when people cared about actual football, not personality cults that lead to ridiculous worthless nonsense like Ballon d'bleddy'Or fever. It would get a lot less "prestige" if they called it what it is - "Journalists' Player of the Year". – at Market Warsop, England

No-one adores Suede's genius more than me, and I'm so delighted they got nominated, and showed themselves to be a vital brand still at a creative peak, but I'm glad they didn't win. Would be like a great 60s band robbing them of their win in 93 - the kids deserve their moment
Suede are in Newcastle tonight for the 2026 @MercuryPrize Awards Show, where Antidepressants is shortlisted as one of the albums of the year. Watch on BBC Four tonight from 9:30pm BST. 📸 Özgür Elver -SuedeHQ

Could not recommend @Mythic_Beasts any more than I do if you want something hosting. On what will have been a bugger of a day their handling of the PHP disaster has been brilliant. Great communication, and my site's already back up and running, patches applied. Top work chaps! – at Market Warsop, England

The real twin paradox is that your twin that's been to space is both younger than you, and can say that they've been to space, so is quite attractive for that. There's no yin to any of that yang.

So Lauren James in the away leg, and Georgia Stanway tonight, both level by the meaning of the word, with two of the best goals you'll see, both ruled out by VAR for being fractions of a thou offside. The sooner Wenger's daylight rule comes in the better. #Lionesses

I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to Tescos in the singular outside a Tescos advert.

Which granted is less irritating than Hyundai's passive aggressive "you uncultured plebs have been saying our name wrong, actually" adverts, when until those very same adverts they said fucking Hyundai the same bleddy way we did.

News report: after spotting Sarah Jones, 19 alone outside a club in Brighton unable to walk, John Smith, 47, offered her a lift home, proceeding to rape her while she was unconscious in the back of his car. He was stopped by a passerby who realised Jones wasn’t awake for the attack. Incels: Sarah Jones regretted having sex with John Smith because she’s a whore
