I have a new OpEd in The @Guardian with Bruce Schneier (@Schneierblog) on the social chill of AI surveillance. We cite my new book #ChillingEffects to argue that if widely deployed, it will be corrosive to democracy & social progress. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

At committee, @jon_penney explained how transnational repression works. Threaten one person, and fear cascades through an entire community.
The closeness that sustains a diaspora is the very closeness foreign regimes exploit. And when threats come, many feel they have nowhere to turn. Even law enforcement can be seen as another threat rather than a source of protection.
That is the deeper harm. The silence, the fear, the people who withdraw from public life. Much of it never appears in a police report, which is precisely why it is so difficult to confront.
Liberals cannot claim to defend Canadian sovereignty while foreign intimidation goes unanswered. Protect those targeted. Confront those responsible. Establish a REAL foreign agent registry.
Canadians answer to no foreign regime.

"We believe students aren’t protesting for a very simple reason: They are afraid. They are self-censoring and disengaging from campaign activism to avoid punitive measures," writes senior research fellow @jon_penney in his new essay w/ Bruce Schneier for @ConversationUS.

Bruce Schneier (@schneierblog) & I have a new essay out in @ConversationUS on the Trump admin's strategy of weaponizing law, technology, & surveillance to chill protest, dissent, & political opposition.

President Trump delayed the U.S. #TikTok ban, but is his executive order legally sound? The Citizen Lab’s @jon_penney writes for the @globeandmail, questioning whether the move addresses privacy and national security issues or is purely about political power.

I wrote about the the TikTok ban in the @GlobeandMail. I argue the ban is dead for a few reasons, but mostly because its' design failed to account for the new era that Trump's admin represents: persistent weaponization of tech and state power:
theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…
Others like @taylor_owen, who I link therein, have written similarly about this new era. It requires a different approach to tech regulation but also democratic governance. The law that enacted the TikTok ban weaponizes rather than restrains this new tech/state power.
