Watch Rishi Joshi (@jon_stewartmill) make an ironclad case that a politically homogeneous professoriate undermines democratic legitimacy. One of our first visiting speakers at WVU’s Washington Center (@WashingtonWVU), Rishi set a high bar. Link below!
Yes. For example, consider the "problematization" of 'merit'.
If there's no such thing as merit, why should YOU, dear professor, get this cushy gig over the local janitor?
In Socialist Society, will this reward (the warmth of All Souls College!) be equally distributed?

Amen. If I hear Marxism from a prof w/an elite background CHOOSING to teach in an elite uni one more time, I’m gonna cry. You do you but don’t be a hypocrite. I’m at the point where if you’ve never cleaned a public toilet as part of your job, I’m uninterested in your theory.

The behavior of many professors defending academia would make tobacco company lawyers blush
One professor punished for speech? An anecdote. A hundred? Cherry-picked. A thousand? Selection bias. Surveys? Bad questions. Better surveys? Methodological concerns!
I've spent 25 years watching defenders of the higher ed status quo turn every new piece of evidence into yet another demand for proof, creating a never-ending cycle of increasingly impossible standards for demonstrating problems that were already obvious 50 years ago!

Made a start here :): conspicuouscognition.com/p/s…. Heath also has a forthcoming book that does something like this which I'm sure will be great.

There's probably not a knockdown argument here, but I feel like there's a kind of dilemma for anthropocentrism. If you lean heavily on intellection, human value ends up continuous with machines. If you lean heavily on experience, human value ends up continuous with animals.

This thread is as insightful as "most traffic accidents involve sober drivers, therefore you shouldn't worry about drunk driving."
1/ The man most likely to rape a White British woman isn't on a small boat or an immigrant. He's her partner or her ex.
The graph by @TheEconomist is doing rounds, and @RestoreBritain , @reformparty_uk and the rest of the circus of the self-appointed protectors of White British women think that it proves their made up point: that White British women's biggest danger is immigrant men.
Well, data and facts say a different story, a story that the circus of the self-appointed protectors of White British women don't want normal people to know.
Here's the data. 🧵

Precisely, and it fits with my new book on poverty and left-dominated social science, which hopefully will be available to download cheaply a few days from now...

Surveys show high levels of democratic voters/registrants in some places and disciplines. But many also show high levels of no party and moderates. To suggest it’s all one ideology is terrible scholarship
Question: does "Our Democracy" just mean rule by the professoriate?
Is this compatible with liberal democracy?

“The ideal of college and liberal education in general was to carve out a period in life where individuals could be exposed to a variety of perspectives and learn to think critically, for themselves. This ideal, it seems, is no longer on the table at many institutions.”
When confronted with the ideological skew of the academy, many underplay the influence faculty have on students.
"I can't even get them to read..."
My latest post addresses this response.
Bonus: some thoughts on @Columbia's core curriculum!
