We could have built bicycles for the mind but we built aircraft carriers instead, because we are fascinated by performance and complexity, and our culture embraces self-indulgence.

I'm doing a course based on my Cultures of Programming book! A perfect excuse to also record the material for anyone who prefers listening over reading.

Can you compose independent UI components w/o modifying them?
Can the synchronization capabilities compose automatically too?
Can it be done at runtime, w/o prior knowledge of the components involved?

What does it take for people to be able to adapt the computer systems they use? This question gives rise to many interesting challenges that have been researched in academia and practice for decades. Under the term substrates, this workshop brings together past and present research directions that explore and realize the vision of systems people truly own. 2027.programmingconference.o…

ok new week new topic. what’s everyone’s favorite joke ever made in a PL publication? I think mine is this one (from “The Myths of Object-Orientation” by James Noble)
I gave Claude my reqs for a PL research project and it recommended @moonbitlang second @fsharporg:
ADTs, pattern matching, structural equality, but also mutability and ref equality, basic collection libs, compile to JS with debugging, FFI for implementing a VDOM. Preferably VSCode tooling
So based on Claude's suggestion I try out @moonbitlang . Yo Claude debugging sucks - it's all mangled symbols! Claude says hold my beer, and writes a VSCode debugger customDescriptionGenerator based on reverse-engineering the name mangling algorithm! I'm scared now.

You remember we practically never move me to go read a good comp sci/eng paper?
Well, I saw this walk-and-talk invite, started to hope I could speak with Jonathan, and over next breakfast found the effort that dies with him unless you take it up. Here =>

The most ridiculous thing about the AI-coding age is that in the last 20 years programmers accepted otherwise all the kind of shit: terrible frameworks, languages, layers of complexity everywhere, everything super slow. Very very few protested, since destroying the field didn't involve their paycheck.
