Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

HUGE Express royal scoop from @chorleycake2 Police Scotland is probing the activities of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell during their time at Balmoral castle. It is understood to relate to claims that women were 'trafficked' to the King’s estate.

Call me cynical, but govts desperate to move poll ratings above late 20 per cents often talk up national emergencies. It makes them appear tough to voters. Remember Boris Covid bounce?

🇺🇸 & 🇪🇺 have already rowed back on proposals to ban hybrid, petrol & diesel cars with the EU looking like it will further weaken its position soon 🚙 🇬🇧 Britain makes great electric, petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars but the government is sticking hard to phase-out dates of 2030 and 2035 for cars, vans and even 🚛 🔵 Under @KemiBadenoch, @Conservatives have a clear and different approach in our plan for drivers which continues to support R&D for the next generation of automotive but stops artificially forcing - at huge taxpayer cost - people into cars and vans that they don’t really want and are often unsuitable to their needs 🥀 It’s time for @andyburnham and @UKLabour to listen to the automotive sector, trades unions, drivers and small businesses Via @jonwalker121 & @Daily_Express express.co.uk/news/politics/…

Latest YouGov/Times/Sky poll: LAB 24%(-3) CON 23%(+3) RefUK 21%(-1) LDEM 12%(+1) GRN 11%(nc) Don’t read too much into this in terms of direction of travel. Shows the Burnham Bounce post-Labour conference short-lived. No surprise. Shows the Badenoch Bounce post-Tory conference. Also likely to be short-lived. But Tories will relish overtaking Reform. Shows Reform still in the doldrums. Not short-lived. Shows LDs and Greens badly need new leaders/new directions. Polls in a month’s time will be more indicative of political trends. The conference season will be long forgotten but the Budget will be factored into people’s voting intentions. Plus the Burnham novelty will be wearing off in face of winter adversity. Until mid-November treat polls carefully (tho this one gives no comfort to the ‘early election’ lobby in the Labour Party).

Today marks three years since the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust. I say since the Holocaust because, throughout history, Jewish people have been subjected to massacres and pogroms. This pernicious and ancient hatred, sometimes described as a light sleeper, feels very much awake and at large today. We know what Hamas did on October 7th, because they filmed it and showed it to the world - proud of their barbarity and depravity. There is no justification - there can be no justification - for such extraordinary acts of evil: setting homes on fire, taking hostages, rape, killing, mutilation of bodies. I am in awe of those survivors who share their testimony with the world to confront those who would look the other way and grieve for those who did not return home. What was so striking here in the UK was that, alongside an outpouring of solidarity for the people of Israel and the Jewish community, there was an immediate and sharp rise in antisemitism. Israel’s war in Gaza does not warrant nor justify hatred towards Jewish people or Israelis, but the fact that this spike in antisemitism took place before the war and in the immediate aftermath of a deadly attack on Jewish people in Israel is chilling. Attacks on the Jewish community - from Golders Green to Heaton Park - have been met with greater investment in security. But our response to antisemitism requires more from each of us. Antisemitism can’t be defeated simply with higher walls and thicker doors. It is a battle of hearts, minds and souls. Consider this: as a Member of Parliament, I go through tougher security to enter one of my local Jewish primary and secondary schools than I do to enter my own constituency office. In Britain, in this decade of the 21st century. This is not the day to debate British foreign policy, or Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. I know there are people affected by antisemitism - among them longstanding friends - in Britain who are very critical of my position and the position of the Government. While we do not support Israel’s occupation in Palestine, we do stand against those who want to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth and those who do not support the right of the Jewish people to self-determination. Zionism is not racism. The Jewish people have the same right to self-determination as others. We have taken action to defend Israel and defeat those who threaten innocent lives in the past and we will do so again as necessary. Finally, I want to send a message to the Union of Jewish Students. More than 20 years ago you taught me about antisemitism and my generation of student leaders thought that the banning of student Jewish societies was a type of antisemitism confined to history. Today’s generation of Jewish student leaders are confronting a far bigger challenge than we faced. Student marches planned for this anniversary are shameful. It is vital that Jewish students do not stand alone. Today, we all face a choice. We can be bystanders to antisemitism or we can be upstanders for the values that represent the best of this country. But be in no doubt: to remain silent is not a neutral act. It is complicity in racism. On this anniversary those of us who are not Jewish have a responsibility to speak up, to stand against antisemitism, and to stand up for this country’s values.

Let’s be clear: these groups are celebrating terrorism, plain and simple. Most Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank do not celebrate October 7. They see it as a catastrophic day that led Gaza into slaughter and devastation. What people need to understand is that these groups do not care about Palestinian lives. They believe it is worth sacrificing Palestinians in Gaza for their resistance fantasies.

Just had a guy on a bike almost crash into me on Marsham Street (maybe 8 mins walk from Parliament) as he was speeding along the pavement on an electric bike. 20s probably, Asian-looking I tell him to not ride on the pavement as I walk away - angrily, but no shouting or swearing etc He throws the bike down and comes after me and says "do you want me to shank you?" (aka stab). Tucked into his belt he has a longish piece of metal - seemed to be some sort of blade but I can't be 100% sure what it was in truth. Enough to scare me anyway I very hurriedly walk away and he yells "yeh run you posh cunt", and at some point he (I think) stops following I call the police (was in two minds between 101 or 999 ; ended up going for the latter). Operator asked me my name and then how to spell it (hardly seemed the priority) Tell her what happened. She asks if I am still in danger - I say well I've walked away but the guy is still around I think She says it's not an emergency so I need to fill out a form on the police website. She says she'll text me the link I say - there's a guy threatening to stab people and is that not a priority? She says no and to fill out the form. I try to interject but mid-sentence she cuts the call That's it Not sure what to think really but as someone who doesn't have many interactions with the @metpoliceuk I just didn't really expect it to be so..dismissive? Maybe they were having a busy Friday night who knows
