"You consented to that data collection" I push back against the myth of consent in a world where companies deliberately try to obfuscate how much data they're collecting, and wrap it in 60 pages of legalize and vague language.

When we post things online, we often don't realize just how much personal and sensitive information we're giving away about ourselves. This is especially true when we post photos and videos. Here are 3 rules to help keep you safe!

I’ve been trying to put my finger on the insidious nature of the past two decades of big data, and this is it. Private data that none of us intended or consented to sharing is not private at all, it’s for sale, and now, it’s essentially becoming public data.
🚨 Meta's AI training practices are questionable, and the @FTC should investigate. Here's why: I start with a quote from Mark Zuckerberg during the Q4/2023 earnings call, which happened on February 1st: “On Facebook and Instagram there are hundreds of billions of publicly shared images and tens of billions of public videos, which we estimate is greater than the Common Crawl dataset and people share large numbers of public text posts in comments across our services as well. But even more important than the upfront training corpus is the ability to establish the right feedback loops with hundreds of millions of people interacting with AI services across our products.” In the context of AI training practices, the FTC, in their blog post from February 13th titled "AI (and other) Companies: Quietly Changing Your Terms of Service Could Be Unfair or Deceptive," stated that: “It may be unfair or deceptive for a company to adopt more permissive data practices—for example, to start sharing consumers’ data with third parties or using that data for AI training—and to only inform consumers of this change through a surreptitious, retroactive amendment to its terms of service or privacy policy.” In this context, the legality of Meta's AI training practices is unclear to me. In the screenshot below, Meta says that they rely on user data to train their models. However, in their privacy policy, especially in the section "How do we use your information," there is no mention of AI training. In fact, to my surprise, there was not a single mention of the word "AI" in their privacy policy. Additionally, people should be able to opt-out, as I mentioned in my recent video. AI training is a separate processing purpose, unrelated to Meta's main services, and people should have the right to choose not to be part of it with their personal information. Whatever is going on here deserves a further look from data protection authorities.

Why do I make videos about the horrendous privacy implications of modern tech? It's not to scare people, it's to inform them. By understanding the tech around us, we can start to push back against practices we don't agree with. This is how we pave the way to a better future.
