1 year ago I quit a job with a steady, reliable income/benefits/hours to join a Start-Up Sport Psychology practice with 2 friends from Grad School. A year later, I reflected on some of the lessons I learned this year. A thread 👇 /1

You need to stop and read this again… Warren Buffet’s final words of advice from his very last annual letter 🥹 "One perhaps self-serving observation. I’m happy to say I feel better about the second half of my life than the first. My advice: Don’t beat yourself up over past mistakes – learn at least a little from them and move on. It is never too late to improve. Get the right heroes and copy them. You can start with Tom Murphy; he was the best. Remember Alfred Nobel, later of Nobel Prize fame, who – reportedly – read his own obituary that was mistakenly printed when his brother died and a newspaper got mixed up. He was horrified at what he read and realized he should change his behavior. Don’t count on a newsroom mix-up: Decide what you would like your obituary to say and live the life to deserve it. Greatness does not come about through accumulating great amounts of money, great amounts of publicity or great power in government. When you help someone in any of thousands of ways, you help the world. Kindness is costless but also priceless. Whether you are religious or not, it’s hard to beat The Golden Rule as a guide to behavior. I write this as one who has been thoughtless countless times and made many mistakes but also became very lucky in learning from some wonderful friends how to behave better (still a long way from perfect, however). Keep in mind that the cleaning lady is as much a human being as the Chairman." And then today, his last letter to shareholders as chairman…

Steve Kerr says Roger Federer taught his Warriors team the secret to sustained success wasn’t outworking everyone, it was building a life around your craft you never want to escape from “I’ll tell you a great story about Roger Federer. We were playing in China with the Warriors in 2017. Roger was in Shanghai for the Masters tournament, so we invited him to come speak to the team.” “Draymond Green asked him, ‘How do you sustain success? How have you managed to win majors 20 years after you first won one?’ Everyone was expecting him to say, ‘I work harder than everybody,’ the will, all the clichés.” “Roger Federer says, ‘I get up every morning and I make breakfast for my kids. Then I take them to school and drop them off. Then I go practice tennis for about two hours, and I’ve figured out a really good routine where I don’t destroy my body, but I can get all the work in I need.” “‘Then I go have lunch with my wife. In the evening, we cook dinner together. The kids are all home from school. We ask them about school. There’s so much joy in the house. We put them to bed, and then I put my head on the pillow and go, “Man, that was just a great day.” And I’ve been doing that for 20 years.’” “And it was like, yes. That’s it. That’s the formula. That’s what leads to sustained success. He loves tennis. He loves his family. He loves life. It’s not outworking everybody and banging your head against the wall, ‘I’m going to be better than everybody.’ It’s allowing your natural talent to shine through with a work ethic, with a great family life, with perspective, with peace, with mindfulness.” “It’s perspective. It’s joy. It’s passion. It’s mindfulness. It’s an awareness that we are truly lucky. To get the most out of ourselves, it’s our daily rituals and experiences and love and joy.”

Kyle Whittingham would move to the NBA, lower his hoop to 6.5’, surround it with seven footers and try to win games 4-1.

A PARENT’S JOURNEY THROUGH YOUTH SPORTS: Age 5: “He’s got a cannon.” Age 6: “He’s the fastest kid out there. Coach said so.” Age 7: “Rec ball isn’t challenging him anymore.” Age 8: “We tried out for select. Obviously made it.” Age 9: “$2,800 for the season. Plus uniforms. Plus tournaments. Plus hotels.” Age 10: “Cooperstown is basically a family vacation, right?” Age 11: “He needs a hitting guy. And a pitching guy. And probably a mental performance coach.” Age 12: “I’m not a crazy sports parent. The OTHER parents are crazy.” Age 13: “We changed schools. For academics. (And also baseball.)” Age 14: “Showcases are a requirement at this age.” Age 15: “Ya his ranking just ticked up. We’re cooking.” Age 16: “He just needs to get seen by the right school.” Age 17: “The D1 schools want him to walk on. He’ll earn a spot by sophomore year.” Age 18: “Okay, D2 is actually really competitive.” Age 19: “He’s redshirting. Strategic.” Age 20: “He’s focusing on school now.” Age 21: “You know what? He’s so much happier.” Roughly 7% of high schoolers play in college. About 1.5% of those get drafted. Less than half of draftees ever play one day in the big leagues. The odds of our kids going pro are somewhere between “struck by lightning” and “find a $100 in old shorts.” I love youth sports (all my kids play a bunch of them) just keep a good perspective my friends. ✌️

Such a great year, you’d be crazy or blind to not give him POY right????
Delon Wright No. 3 overall👀 He was such a special player for the Runnin' Utes, and I'm genuinely curious how far Utah could have gone if he didn't foul out against Duke in the Sweet 16.

A reminder. Mascots are for the children. If you're a grown man upset about a mascot, you're doing it wrong. Kids will love Tusky.

Don't play the video yet; I first want you to do an experiment. Look at the words in quotation marks that this guy typed out. He then said "what a wild thing to say." Indeed it is, right? Now play the video.

ICYMI: My latest is a long piece on the historic rise in social isolation in America. Here are the 10 most important, depressing, or just mind-blowing statistics I found in my reporting. ON SOCIAL ISOLATION 1. Men who watch television now spend 7 hours in front of the TV for every 1 hour they spend hanging out with somebody outside their home. 2. The typical female pet owner spends more time actively engaged with her pet than she spends in face-to-face contact with friends of her own species. 3. From the late 1970s to the late 1990s, the frequency of hosting friends for parties, games, dinners, and so on declined by 45%, according to Robert Putnam. Then it got worse. Between the early 2000s and the latest data, the average amount of time that Americans spent hosting or attending social events declined another 32%. ON ALONENESS AND HAPPINESS 4. A 5-percentage-point increase in alone time is associated with about the same decline in life satisfaction as was a 10% lower household income. ON TV 5. From 1965 to 1995, the typical adult gained 6 weekly hours in leisure time. They funneled almost all of it into one activitiy: watching TV. 6. In 1970, just 6 percent of sixth graders had a TV set in their bedroom; in 1999, that proportion had grown to 77 percent. ON TEENS 7. The share of boys and girls who say they meet up with friends almost daily outside school hours has declined by nearly 50 percent since the early 1990s. ON 'HOMEBOUND' LIFE 8. According to Princeton's Patrick Sharkey, today's adults spend an additional 99 minutes inside their homes on any given day, compared with 2003. 9. The share of U.S. adults having dinner or drinks with friends outside the home on any given night has declined by more than 30% in the past 20 years. ON RESTAURANTS 10. I think of restaurants as the ultimate "social" business. But today, just one-quarter of restaurant traffic is "on-premises"—that is, sitting, ordering, talking with people at a table. With the rise and rise of delivery 74% of all restaurant traffic now comes from “off premises” customers—takeout and delivery. And according to data gathered by OpenTable, solo dining has increased by 29% in just the past two years. The top reason given? The need for more “me time.” *** All of these statistics were checked by our sensational fact-checking department. I provided evidence to them and am happy to provide evidence to others, on request, who have questions about the data or just want to go deeper. ***

As we close the chapter on this remarkable season, and I reflect on the incredible milestones we've achieved together - Winning our second consecutive Mountain West Championship, reaching national rankings for the first time, and hosting an NCAA tournament game, I am filled with gratitude for our student-athletes who poured their hearts into this program, our dedicated staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, the best student section in the country - The Hurd, who brought unmatched energy and support, and the Cache Valley community who rallied behind us and helped to make this season unforgettable. #AggiesAllTheWay 🤘🏾🔵
