This iconic photo was taken in August 2023 when Caroline Kennedy (then U.S. Ambassador to Australia) and Jack Schlossberg traveled to the Solomon Islands to recreate a portion of the historic WWII swim made by President John F. Kennedy. The mother-and-son swim commemorated the 80th anniversary of the PT-109 rescue, where a young JFK swam between islands to save his stranded crew.

At 65, she swam over a mile in the Solomon Islands with her son, Jack, to honor her father, JFK, in the same stretch of sea where he saved his crew in 1943.
Caroline Kennedy, serving as the United States Ambassador to Australia, decided to undertake this powerful journey to mark the 80th anniversary of the legendary PT 109 rescue.
The waters of the South Pacific hold a profound place in her family history, serving as the backdrop for an act of heroism that defined her father's early life long before he became president.
These tropical waters are beautiful, but they are also notoriously dangerous, known for unpredictable ocean currents, strong tides, and native wildlife like sharks and jellyfish.
During WWII, JFK was commanding a patrol boat when a Japanese destroyer collided with it, splitting the vessel in two. Two crew members were killed, but Kennedy gathered the survivors and towed an injured sailor by holding a life jacket strap between his teeth, swimming for hours.
His life was ultimately saved thanks to the brave intervention of two local Solomon Islanders who carried a message carved into a coconut to Allied forces.
To honor that legacy, Caroline stepped into those same clear, challenging waters alongside her son, Jack Schlossberg. Together, they swam between Kasolo Island—now known as Kennedy Island—and Olasana Island.
After reaching the shore, Caroline said, "It gave me a renewed appreciation for the heroism of my father and his crew."
Water holds memories, carrying stories of human strength from one era to the next.

En la mañana del 2 de noviembre de 1975, un carpintero que salía de Roma con su familia encontró un cuerpo en un descampado de Ostia, junto a la playa. Estaba tan golpeado que costó reconocerlo: lo habían apaleado y después atropellado varias veces con su propio coche. Era Pier Paolo Pasolini, poeta, periodista y uno de los cineastas más importantes de Europa. Tenía 53 años, y hoy se cumplen 51 de su asesinato.
Pasolini era incómodo para casi todos. Comunista que discutía con el Partido Comunista, ateo que dirigió «El Evangelio según San Mateo», quizá la mejor película sobre Jesús jamás rodada, intelectual que defendía a los marginados y avisaba de que la televisión y el consumo iban a uniformar a la gente mucho más que cualquier policía. Detalle escalofriante: un debate que había grabado denunciando la censura no se emitió hasta el día después de su asesinato.
Aquella noche detuvieron a Pino Pelosi, un chico de 17 años, conduciendo el coche de Pasolini. Confesó el crimen y fue condenado. Pero en 2005, veintinueve años después, se retractó: dijo que habían sido tres personas «con acento del sur» y que insultaban a Pasolini llamándolo «comunista asqueroso». La policía reabrió el caso, luego lo cerró por falta de pruebas, y en 2023 se volvió a pedir su reapertura: las nuevas pistas apuntan a la Banda della Magliana, la mafia de Roma, con vínculos con la logia masónica P2 y la extrema derecha. Cincuenta y un años después, aún no sabemos quién mató a Pasolini.
Lo que más me gusta de él es que nunca buscó caer bien, sino decir lo que veía. En consulta pasa algo parecido: preferimos las mentiras amables a las verdades incómodas, y sin embargo son las segundas las que nos hacen libres. Los Pasolini molestan mientras viven y se echan de menos cuando se van.
